Just had to examine quoted statement by MarkP in Fleecing of American Taxpayer thread

?Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.?

Examination of the above statement put into context with our Nation?s History

Bondage 1640 Widespread Slavery Introduced

Spiritual Truth 1772 Shakers Established / Religion Begins

Great Courage 1861 Civil War followed by WWI and WWII

Liberty 1964 Civil Rights Act

Abundance 1970 Welfare System Expanded

Selfishness 1980 Disproportionate of Majority Still in Poverty

Complacency 1990 Fast Food Takes a Front Seat in Nutrition

Apathy 2000 E-mail Communication Comes of Age

Dependence 2005 Natural Disasters Increase Social Programs

Bondage ? *

* Collapse of our Nation?s and World Economy caused by the effects of Global Warming, Peak Oil Syndrome and depleted natural resources coupled with a wide spread release of WMD?s by Muslim Terrorists bent on World Domination resulting in martial law, dictatorship and Bondage.

Hmmmm... Very intuitive.

Socialism is the least of the worries...

We are at risk from none of these fantasies,,, particularly not "depleted natural resources". Go back & read Thomas Malthus, among others. Well over 100 years ago, doomsayers were predicting the same thing: an inability to feed an overpopulated world. As the 20th century history proves, the innovation & creativity encouraged by the profit-motive will continue to expand our understanding of previously "finite" resources. Among shortages and out-right crises predicted just within the past 30-40 years, we can include copper, zinc, oil, fresh water, natural gas, & coal,,, among others. Yet last time I checked copper wire was relatively inexpensive at the local Home Depot and rich coal mines laid dormant.

I suggest Rand: "The Return of the Primative". Also "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" (a compilation of writings on the subject by Rand, among others including pieces by Alan Greenspan in his overt-Objectivist days).

The Muslim Terrorist threat, in terms of past geopolitical/military threats, is slightly more than a mouse-fart,,, as example: when compared to the threat of the Soviet Union in the 20th century, Germany in the 30's & 40's (and some would argue Russia or China today should economic diplomacy give way to geopolitical belligerance). The only thing standing in the way of the absolute elimination of the Muslim 'threat' is the collective will of the western world, specifically the U.S., and the political correctness that has infected our culture. One large WMD incident, and the will will galvanize quickly.

We're lowering oil prices because of refinery capacity. We can get loads more oil than we can refine, which is our limiting factor. However, refineries take about a decade to build, but will drop the prices considerably if a few are built in strategic locations. Also, the War of Northern Aggression was not about slavery, slavery was just a facade.

It's too bad that we'll have to endure this, but I do believe that is the only thing that will convince us to chnage our thinking and put a stop to all the political correctness and bleeding heart bullshit.
The human race has suffered and given up much more than we could ever imagine living our plush lives...it's about time we get medieval.

That's true, if you went with his logic, we should already be dead from an overstretching of the planet's carrying capacity.

How true.

Another sad fact is that or Commander in Chief squawks about home land security, while the number of illegal aliens crossing the border has doubled every year he has been in office. Shouldn?t the borders have been the second thing we took care of after kicking the shit out of the Taliban in Afghanistan? Then instead of wanting to round up all those who snuck in good old GW wants to make them honorary citizens, and here we are years after 911 and the boarder is still as wide open as ever.

No argument here although I do admit I'm terrible at predicting things, thats why I don't gamble. I will go with Collapse of Social Security System in 2017 since that is the concensus prediction.

Recycling with go along way to stave off finite resources.

I'm not sure it's the best thing for us if Terrorists do attack us again, but if and/or when we had better nuke them back into the fossil age.
