For about a month I've been ignoring the "service engine" light on my 98 Disco I with 86000mi on her, until my "check engine" light came on recently and I figured I needed to take care of some issues. So I reset the "service engine" light and drove about 10 miles into work and then the "check engine" light went out too. Is it possible that the "check engine" light came on because the "service engine" light was on so long and I have no reason to be concerned? Or should I look further into the "check engine" alert?

service engine light is on a timer. it is an emissions reminder. it is in no way related to the actual operation of the vehicle nor is it tied to the check engine light. the check engine light is involved with the ecu and directly related to the engines performance. if it comes on there is a fault. it needs to be read at autozone or anyone with an OBDII scanner. in any case when the check engine light is on but you dont notice anything obvious its not a big deal, but its good to find out what it is/was

the check engine light will reset itself after not seeing the problem again after so many cycles. so....whatever it was is not a problem anyomre.....i would guess it was a typical misfire.

enjoy!
