Random question...I am rebuilding my trail rig. Is the radiator fan shroud absolutely necessary? I know it probably helps with directing air over the engine, but it sure would free up a lot of space in front of the engine to just leave it out. Thoughts?

Yes, I would say it is 100% needed... To note: it does not direct the flow over the engine at all, it is a cowling for the fan itself. Without it you would just be blending the air not pulling the air if that makes sense.

However, you may want to consider ditching the mechanical fan all together and switching to electric fans. Then you would have loads of space if that is your goal.

Having done that using a pair of Spahl fans in a Derale shroud there is a bit of room to be gained but it's not huge:

I should find a shroud for mine. I've been running it for three years with no issues. It didn't have it when I bought it.
