(evaporative emissions systems leak detected) Has anyone had this or know if this is common?

This is a common code that can be caused by a loose gas cap.
To reset, disconnect your battery for a few minutes and see if it goes away. After you check your gas cap that is.

check all vacuum lines (connections) mainly the vacuum cap beside the throttle cable it likes to crack and set codes. also make sure you are not filling up with gas when the engine is running that will set a code. check the wracheting of the gas cap have seen many that are messsed up or just not silling to the filler neck.
any further than that the shop will have to run a smoke test on the evap system to check for leaks

good luck

Had the exact same thing happen to my 00DII, 5 times that is. Everythime they'd do the smoke test and not be able to find anything wrong. They mentioned a purge valve thet may go bad, but for mine that wasn't it. Ended up being a faulty gas cap, cheap fix thankfully.

Cheers.

I've had this same code since I've owned my 00DII. The gas cap was replaced at about 50K and it still throws the code. I can reset my own codes, but it's a hassle when I take it to get inspected.

When installing the cap, AFTER it starts clicking, inspect it closely. If you can still see threads between the black cap & the steel filler neck, the ratchet isn't working right & your cap is leaking. If the dealer has replaced the cap, make them replace it again AND the filler neck, too. It might be warped.
