GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A 22-year-old woman is dead after crashing her vehicle into the back (ed note: FRONT) of a Glendale Fire Department ladder truck parked while firefighters were on an emergency call, police said.

The victim has been identified as Nicole Ward.

The fire truck, with its lights flashing, was parked in a curb lane in front of a house near 51st and Greenway avenues, police said.

Firefighters said they heard a huge crash while treating a man who had fallen.

They ran to their truck and discovered Ward had plowed head-first into the vehicle.

The woman was trapped inside. After freeing her, Ward was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital where she died a short time later, police said.

you can't miss a bright yellow and chrome truck with 30+ flashing lights at 11am. Can't tell, but I think it was engine 153. Local company to where I grew up.

The Lou!
Wow that sucks. Maybe I'm just a size queen, but I sure do drive extra careful and make double sure that my seatbelt is on when I'm driving my tiny little xBox. The newer ones are so much better with the bazillion air bags in them, kinda like being trapped inside a volleyball when all those things go off. The 2007 and earlier just have the standard front air bags. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for firetrucks until my Disco is on the road again!

I could always call RTE and see if they've started making bumpers for the Scion.

I've got a fondness for some steel & aluminum around me rather than just balloons.
But that's just me.
Personally, I don't care if people wear a seatbelt or not, but if you come flying out of your car and hit mine, I'm gonna be pissed!

I'm not trying to be crass, insensitive, or a smartass. My heart goes out to her family. That is a terrible thing to happen to a 22 year-old girl. My oldest daughter is that age.
That being said...
I'll bet when the firefighters extricated her, she had a cell phone clutched in her hand.

You need to get out of that lil' thing Jen.. this is your uncle Rob speaking. I can't stand to see someone in a small car anymore, just too dangerous with all us big trucks on the road.

Right on! What could possibly distract someone enough that they cant see a parked, lighted fire truck!

The law of the road says if you hit something that isnt moving.... YOU are the moron!

Talking with the one of the Fire Administrators, that's the second ladder taken out by an accident this year. Someone rearended another one while they were stopped at a light (non emergency).
