The blower fan has gone manic on me. Shuts off, changes speed at will. No new noises and the fan speed control appears to work normally. Ideas? At 25+ years old I should probably consider replacing the blower motor anyway. Is there a commonly available substitute for the original?

It is super easy to pull it out and make sure there is no dirt or leaves stuck in the squirrel cage. The motor can also be cross-referenced to other brands/makes.

An update for anyone having a similar issue. I'll be the first to say this seems too easy and likely won't be a permanent fix but looking through the manual the blower switch appeared a real PITA to access so, without any disassembly, I squirted some contact cleaner beside the switch actuating lever and worked the switch back and forth. Voila! All fan speeds are working. At least this gives me a starting point if the problem returns. I'll likely swap out the blower motor when warmer weather returns. For now there are more pressing matters - the back door is stuck open so I have a rope on it. It's not been a great rover week.
