flame trap

For the last few days, I've been checking some things out under the hood of my 89 classic in hopes of trying to solve an EFI problem. The flame trap is filthy and needs replaced. Until I can get the replacement, will carb cleaner work and does the carb cleaner need to be rinsed? Will the flame trap set off the EFI light? I'm checking the stepper motor as of now. Thanks for all answers.

Thanks. The mesh part of the flame trap is soaking right now, but I've just tried to attach a multi-meter and adjust the throttle potentiometer sensor, and mine is not adjustable. Is this the way it is for all 89 classics?

The best way to clean the mesh is by soaking it in a caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide) solution (lye in some countries). We can buy it in the supermarket but in some countries you may need to buy it as drain cleaner.

Remewmber - never add water to caustic soda crystals. Always add the crystals to water as a lot of heat is generated and if water is added, they can blow out into your eyes.

This stuff is a strong alkali and is caustic and will eat through clothing, skin and eyes. Use goggles.
