So I have noticed something about how people in different parts of the states position there fingers differently. Where do you suppose this cute old couple hail from?

In the midwest it seems like people leave there thumb out and kind of a loose relaxed fist . In some places its a tight fist with the thumb folded into the fist and out of site . In some places its not even a fist and the first knuckle of every other finger is up . I know you guys find it hard to believe it but I get flipped off alot

I wish I knew how to post pics on this site. I just made my 5th grey goose martini and it is an absolute masterpiece. No punn intended on the absolute reference.

Here's a nice example of two totally different styles. You can tell both these guys are pissed because the muscles in there forearm are tensed up . See I get flipped off so much that I get all these styles quite often.

I prefer to have a tightly closed fist and the middle finger sticking up as straight and far as possible. It is kind of half assing it when you have a loose fist with the other fingers part way up. When I flip someone off I'm going to do it right, I would never half ass flipping someone the bird.

The reason people stick up the knuckles of the index and ring finger out on either side. Is because flipping the "Bird" is supposed to represent showing someone your dick and the knuckles are the balls. Therefore if you use a fully closed fist you are showing people that you have no balls.

At least that is how it was explained to me when I first came to this country.

That's understood to be the meaning of the gesture. It's been around for thousands of years, though, and I imagine some of it is speculation by the same people who dig up a chamber pot and call it a religious artifact.

Cheers,

Where at ? I mean what state did that get explained to you in . Cause it really is done differently and seems to be like a dialect , same like a southern drawl vs a upper peninsula "ya hey der" kind of yuk.

Look at this one , I get this one sometimes . Notice he's showing his knuckles but his hand is still clinched into a tight fist . His palm is pointed up .

Then that little cock sucker in orange , He's gonna have plenty of time to flip that camera off . Unless he figures out some way to kill himself in that little cell.

If you go to Chicago and piss off an Italian, you'll get the "Italian Salute". It's where you form your right arm into an L and then grab your bicep with your left hand. It's so much more emphatic than simply flipping the bird. I think I learned it when I was about 4.

I am Italian and from Chicago . You are absolutely correct about that gesture . Have you ever seen the tips of the fingers moved in an upward motion against the throat ? That means " YOU MAKE ME WANT TO PUKE " that's European but not nec Italian

My wife and sister and I had this very conversation last night. My wife is a thumb-sticker-outer and she lets her knuckles relax a bit and stick up next to the offending digit. My sister and I are balled fists and proud middle fingers.

That's not the story I remember. I remember it as a pirate gesture meaning fluke, I.E., I'm going to fluke you. As in, shooting someone with an arrow or spear.
