OK.... First let me say I just purchased a 97 Disco and im coming from a wrangler so it's def a big jump. But I have to say the ROVER will go... Now onto the question... When im driving I noticed a strong burning smell so of course popped the hood and knew already what it was but the question is where is it??? It has a bad oil leak, I Think it's coming from the valley pan gasket but then again poss a crank seal... Anyone have any suggestions and if you say Valley Pan what kinda works invloved... All input is welcome...and Im expecting to hear some smack about the Wrangler thing. So until then :banghead:

Is the leak front or rear of the engine? Valley gasket will usually leak at rear, but valve covers might need tightened to see if they are the culprits too! Getting to the left side drivers cover is halfway to changing valley gasket. Try tightening valve covers, the front and rear vally gasket bolts in middle front and rear ( just snug these ) and tighten pan gasket bolts and then watch for leaks.

If you fix the oil leak how will you know you still have oil in it.

Seriously vally gasket and VC gaskets aren't to hard. I did mine with only one minor hitch. I say go for it. The more work you do yourself the better you know your rover.:)

Seriously.... Any one know where to get the vc and valley gaskets???

Try Will Tillery first. If that doesn't work try Atlantic British or Rovers North.

I appriciate it guys but here's my conclusion...think Im just going to do all major seals....

VC gaskets
Valley Gasket
Front Crank seal

Any other gaskets I should be aware of that are common to leak?

If you are smelling burning oil, in my opinion then the particular leak that is causing the smell has to come from above the exhaust manifolds/headers, as those are the only parts near the engine hot enough to burn the dripping oil.

I've got the same Disco that you do and have several oil leaks, but not enough time to fix them. I just add oil every three weeks or so.
I do know that my biggest leak is my rear main seal, that could be a problem for you, but wouldn't account for the smell.
I also noticed that when I changed my plugs the other day, I had oil around one of them, so that tells me it could even be a ring.
Also, I get the burning oil smell every time I add oil becasue I don't have a funnel very often and end up spilling some down the engine. That could be a possibility here too.
Good luck.

Here's a related valley pan gasket question.
I just came from the stealership to have them look at a rough idle (only when A/C is on and temp is unpegged). Said it was a valley pan gasket leak (he poured water on the engine and saw it bubble).

So, with 160K on the engine, (it's a '95 Disco) does it make sense to do just the valley pan gasket?

Yea see thats right where im at and not really... If you going to take the valley pan off and replace it you might as well at a minimum do valve cover gaskets... I did the job already only took like 5 hrs... I also did the crank seal though too and so far no leaks.... Now I just need to figure out why my Trans seems to shift harder when it gets warm....and from park to drive or drive to reverse hits a little harder any guidence would be amazing.... Seems like the disco is going to be a big ball of fun

Is it like domestic transmissions in the way that I should not drop the pan and change the filter if it is over so many miles or does that not matter?

Also got another question.... Yesterday I put the Disco 97 on the Alignment rack and I could not turn the PanHard Rod at all then I also tried to adjust the main bar for the steering stabilizer trying to adjust the toe... Both were completely frozen... I really want to just adjust the off center steering wheel... Wondering if I should just replace them or can I disconnect the Rod from the steering box and center the steering wheel then reattach... Eventually I am going to replace them when I can find em cause I want to align it to stop the tires from eating up.... Thanks for the Input I really appriciate it

the panhard dosent turn its a fixed rod

the stock drag link and tie rods rust up pretty bad and are hard to adjust.

they also are junk and need to be replaced if you have any intention of wheeling the thing.

there are a number of venders that make aftermarket steering rods as well as some on this board that sell them for a very fair price.

start in the for sale section then hit resources on the top menu and then vendors
