Sorry for not answering you, I was on a surf trip.

Well a new 2004 discovery TD5 would be around $30,000to $39,000 USD depending on the model. I haven?t seen any 2003 or 2004 used Discovery?s TD5 but I think they are around $ 20,000 or less for the 2003 models. Ranges Rovers starting at $70,000 new and Defenders starting at $30,000 new (2004) and used ones around $10,000+ (110 and 90 models TD5 only). All this prices vary depending on the model of Disco that you want.

This isn't the first time I've seen a thread about the TD engines.

If you're living in the US, why would you want one?

The 4.0 V8 is gutless as it as, why want something even wimpier? The 300TDI engines put out, what, 120 hp?

Don't tell me it's about gas mileage. You can't buy a Discovery and then complain about the MPG... If you're living somewhere where gasoline is exhorbitantly expensive like Europe or S. America, fine, whatever.

But I just can't agree with someone that wants to putt-putt around town in an imported diesel just because it gets 23 mpg.

What's the fascination with Euro TD engines? Can someone enlighten me?

dieyoung,

how about range, braniac?

on a long trip to a remote spot two jerry cans of fuel means 300 miles on top of the 600+ you got out of the tank.

i'd go for that.

We are talking TD5 engines. The Td5 exhibits little of the diesel clatter at idle that the old Tdi300 engine was renowned for, and as revs increase, the engine becomes even smoother. Peak output is a claimed 101.5 kW at 4200 rpm and 315 Nm at 1950 rpm. Impressive for a diesel engine with only a 2.5-litre capacity. More impressive is the way the Td5 develops its torque. After a brief pause from standstill, the turbo soon comes on boost and maximum torque is available. The result is that once on the move, the turbo-diesel Discovery is almost as quick as its 4.0-litre V8 stablemate.

Range? NINE HUNDRED miles? What, are you trekkin' the Gobi? Or just seeing if you drive from Dallas to LA without filling up? :p

Even if it meant carrying a few : gasp: extra jerry cans, I'd feel much more comfortable pulling X-hundred pounds up Lion's Back with a admittedly wimpy V8 than waiting for my turbo to kick in at a particularly tight spot.

Brief pause? Yikes..

Under all that weight, roof rack, winch, sliders, underbody protection, etc, I'd wonder how much more effecient a 2.5 litre engine would be.

I want my truck to drive like a truck, not like a Honda S2000.

you aint paying attention! That Td5 sticker is the sh** for picking up bitches!

Seriously, that's about the extent of it. Your Gobi scenario is spot on. People just want to look Camel ready, and nothing says "Bill Burke in Mongolia" like twelve 4000s and some sand ladders teamed with the clatter of diesel. Besides, if efficiency and range were the determining factors for choosing a vehicle to be the basis for a Gobi-venture, the D110 would be a total failure.

Leaving the TD out of the US was one of the few marketing choices LR has made that I agree with.

Thanks for the info Panama. If you see a used TD5 03 or 04 DII, please post it or email me at dsum@mindspring.com. As to why I would like a TD5, mileage, better out of country fuel availability. Besides, what's wrong with getting 23 mpg while driving around town? I guess getting only 12-13 mpg around town is "smarter".

David,

Ill late you know. Now that the LR3 (Discovery for the rest of the world) is going to be for sale in Panama at the end of October the prices for 2003 & 2004 Discovery?s are going to be pretty good. I don?t like the LR3 to much but the TD6 engines are pretty nice.

I would much rather have a TD5 than a v8 even though I am more impressed every time I get after the gas. I would get one just for the mileage because in case you guys havent noticed gas or diesel isn't getting any cheaper. Besides the less money you spend on fuel is more money for modifications.

TD5
120.33 HP
221.26 FT/LBS
MPG: 23.2/29.7

LR3
300 HP
315 FT/LBS
MPG 14/18

TD6
324.52FT/LBS
They dont give a horsepower rating

I like the figures on that LR3. That thing would tear up lions back even with X-hundred lbs. Even with extra gerry cans would weigh it down along with plenty of exsesive gear that people tend to carry around. I many a-time have though about importing a TD5 land rover because its different not many porple have a TD5, but the fuel requierd is actually very hard to get a hold of in developing nations however it is safer to transport than gasoiline. I hope that some day land rover will import diesel engins to the U.S..

This concludes my current statement

Peter,
Thanks. I would prefer to buy used. Also, the vehicle needs to be black. That's a long story, but lets just say it has to do with "import regulations." ;) BTW, do the 03 TD5s have the CDL? Thanks again.

I was perusing the NHTSA site and found a List of vehicles that can be imported into the US with some modification. It lists:

1993 Defender 110
1994-1998 Discovery
2000 Discovery (II)

It looks like a Registered Importers could get these guys in, but it doesn't metion anything about fuel type.
