2001 DII w/CDL. I have one front tire off the ground (on jack) and it will not spin. Acts like CDL is in lock but it is not. Shouldn't wheel and tire spin free?

I wouldnt think the tire would turn because if you are trying to turn one tire while the other front tire is on the ground then the front differential will have to turn as well with the tire in the air. Anyone feel free to correct me but I think that makes sense

if you put the TC in N or lift the other tire then that wheel will spin. for anything to spin (either wheel or driveshaft) at least one other must be free to spin as well/

ok. I just went and lifted the other front tire and then it turned. Don't make much since to me. I have a 2000 Explorer with the Auto T/C and I can lift one front tire off the ground and spin it. Figured it would be the same principle.

Thanks for the quick replies.

the explorer is primarily 2x4 and most likely has automatic locking front hubs that disengage when the truck is in 2 wheel drive cutting the effect of the front diff from the equation when you try to turn one tire. The rover is full time 4x4 so the front axles are always directly connected to the front diff causing this effect

come on now lets not be talking bad about my "Fords".

Anyway the reason I was checking the front wheels is because when you first take off there is a sqeaking like the driveshaft or wheel bearing. I checked both D/S's and u-joints are fine. I lifted the front drivers side and that is when I noticed it wouldn't spin like I thought it should. After I lifted the other side and spun I don't think its the bearings. I might remove the front D/S tomorrow to see if that gets rid of it.

Night before last I used the Disco to pull a small building (using pipes) and had the CDL locked. Prior to that I didn't have the sqeaking. Now I need to find the source.

Good call Musky. I removed the front D/S and the noise went with it. Just checked my receipts and I had it rebuilt 7/10/07. 2 years was all it lasted.

Does anyone know if there are u-joints available that has the grease zerk? The ones I bought last time didn't. Also what about that big bearing, how do you grease it?

you cant grease it even the centering bearing is non-servicable.

the best fix is to replace the shaft with a bigger stronger one that has grease fittings in all the ujoints and the centering bearing.

my favorite is the Tom Woods shaft. you can get them either direct from tom woods at 4xshaft.com or from will tillery who is a regular here on the board and a authorized dealer of Tom Woods.

its a bit more money but it is the best way to fix the issue once and for all.

yeah I had thought about replacing also. Looks like it will be cheaper in the long run.

Also in the mean time I'm not going to do any damage to the truck by driving it with the CDL locked until I replace/fix the front D/S?

Just don't give it too much gas...:)

I drove mine around for a while like that with no ill effects.
