I just finished the install of my 4:11 gears and Detroit/Trutrac combo and broke something in the front the first ride out. I have not had time to take it apart yet but im still looking for alittle advise, please dont flame!

I was trying to cross a rut and the pass. front tire was in the air so I applied the brakes to help the trutrac engage. I was on the brake pretty hard as well as the gas and got one good pop. After this, neither front tire would pull. Whatever broke, broke very clean, no pops or any bad noise and I was able to drive it home. I will take it apart Wednesday night but have a couple questions.

Odds are I broke a birfield (cv) shaft right? What can I expect to pay for a used one and where can I get one?

I plan on running 33TSL's, do I need the longfield kit? Are they shipping yet? I have read yes, but have also heard people bitching about not getting them weeks after their order. I am wanting to be back in the woods pretty quick.

I didnt think a upgrade would be needed with 33" tires but I broke the first trip out. Any advise?? Thanks

Huh. Dunno. Were you going up or down, weight on front or rear (sounds like rear).

Wheels turned or not? Good traction or not? Did the wheel come down, then pop?

A CV cage or star broken, would be a nasty, nasty noise.

Shaft might not make too much noise.

sounds like an axle. I run TT front and rear and I snapped a rear axle running 285/75's, that's when I decided to upgrade axles. When I broke mine it had one loud pop and that was it. so its definetly possible, mostly since you were manipulating the trutrac with the brake.

I would definately recommend upgrading both your axles and CV's if your going to be running 33's and locked. I'd go with the Rover Tracks just becuase he's got the best price i've seen.

Yes Detroit = Broken Stock axles. You will snap them with any size tire I believe.

I really do not think that the front would matter with a TT, but I might be wrong. Sorry, I run dual ARB.

front TT will make twigs on those CV's, funny thing is I've broke all 3 of mine going slow with brakes applied slight turned.

you can get stock axle CVs from will for under $150 a set. Long term though, get the longtracks from keith. there was a shipping delay but they will be out soon, call him and reserve your set. As for the rear, get his rear axles before you break them and destroy your DT.

However, not sure what you broke - when you drive do you hear and clangs or ding?

I was going uphill with the wheels turned very little. The pass. tire was in the air and the drivers had some weight on it since the rig was leaning hard towards the drivers side. It was one good pop and made no noise after that. I will start the teardown tonight.

PS. I did upgrade the rear shafts with GBR's when I did the rear detroit.

If I order the longfields is there anything else I will need up front? This thing has been apart too long and im ready to ride so tell me what I need to build the front the right way.

You should be OK up to 35"s with the new LongTracks...

OK, sounds like a fracture cage then. Probably didn't blow it all the way, take off that side and take a look.

Longtracks are a drop in replacement, you will loose the ABS ring, meaning no ABS - but that's not a big deal on these trucks.

They are rated around 6500lbs breaking strength, the stock are around 3000lbs.

Took it apart today and it broke clean on the inner shaft about 6 inches from the cage.

I think I want to try one more stock shaft before going with the bling stuff.

Anyone have one??

Will Tillery has the shafts you want.

But, a little birdy told me there will be an alternative to the Longtracks soon, same material:) Only, with ABS rings. Sorry, but that's all the information I have. So don't ask.

didn't you ask someone else why they would leak a little bit of info without disclosing the rest? i think it was here. just sayin' :flipoff: these wouldn't be from somewheres in the midwest, also for a D2, would they?
