Tossing around the idea of making and selling a non-winch bumper similar to the RTE slimline with a light bar. Prototype is being constructed out of 4x2x1/8" steel rectangle tube and 3/16" plate. Thinking in the area of $650 a piece. Hope to have pictures by next week. Anybody possibly intrested? Just trying to figure if there is a market. Thanks!

lots of people are making bumpers for these now, and they are CAD designed, CNC cut, press brake bent, and then welded using fixtures and jigs, not chop sawn rectangular tube.

unless you have something revolutionary don't expect a market for it, especially without a winch.

Also CO isn't the place to be to ship big items. Some friends of mine run a truck accessory company, used to be in CO but had to move east where shipping and shop space is cheap.

If people like the look of RTE, they are going to buy the real thing. While I am not a fan of their front bumper design, they have a good reputation and sponser just about every big club event in the country.

A non winch bumper won't sell well. However I see no reason to waste money on CNC design for a Rover bumper, it goes on a Disco, not the space shuttle. Laser cutting vs chop-saw is a question of production scale and design, same thing with CNC bending, if you can make what you need out of existing shapes, use them and pass the savings on to the customer.

Shop space would be a concern, but shipping? That's based entirely on how far it has to go, not where it starts from. CO is in the center of the country, so shipping to anywhere in the US should be around $100, much better than paying close to, or over $200 to get an RTE shipped out here to the west coast.

Build it and post pics.

I think, that there is nothing wrong with building your own, unique front bumper. However you should study the ins and outs of other available bumpers first and try to incorporate the features into yours that you think are most important. Take extra time during your build and make your finished product as nice as possible, so that one day you will have a snowballs chance in hell of actually being able to resell it for more than $150.

I'm good at welding and love fab work. I am just super turned off by going out there and coughing up ~1k for a decent bumper from somewhere like $ gard. As for the design end of it, my dad is an engineer at Boeing and works with me on the parameters. I want something revolutionary that benefits everyone by leaving cash in their pocket when they build their disco, which seems to be non-existent. Thanks for the input everybody!:applause:

trust me, If I could afford a winch I would have one. All of my friends have them, and if I get stuck we rig a snatch block, so it's not a must have now deal. I'm just thinking there has to be somebody out there who wants a stout bumper and is in the same fiscal scenario as me and doesn't want an ugly empty winch tray? I mean revolutionary by being an actual decent looking and performing bumper instead of some gross billet steel thing you get a pep boys. I'm about 70% done with the prototype, it's fully boxed and strong as hell, and looks great.

I agree the CAD is awesome. On my first bumper I ever built I used nothing but a sharpie and a tape measure with no pre conceived idea of what I wanted to do, just got bored and got out the welder.DSC02001.jpg
