Was wondering if anyone has had to change their front door actuator and is this DIY? I can't get my driver side door open without having to insert the key and turning the lock. Any know what can cause this?
Thanks

Welcome to the club - I can't open any doors without using the key. It just quit one day. The wierd thing is that when I use the remote the door lock the actuators in the doors all make noise, but nothing happens. Sometimes it takes one click of the button to arm the alarm, sometimes it takes two. Sometimes it will unlock the door and turn the alarm off, sometimes it will lock and engage the alarm when I use the key - sometimes it don't.

Then only answer I got was that it is the front drivers side door lock actuator because that one controls the rest. So I replaced it - an easy job, just be careful with the plastic clips that hold the door trim on - you can get them off without breaking them, but be prepared with 14 new ones from the dealer - cheap.

So I replaced it but it does not work. SOOOOOOO, I got another one, same thing, no lock. The only thing I can figure is that all the door locks burned out at the same time, or that the compter that recieves the signal from the actuator/remote, sets the alarm, and locks the doors is dead. But I can't get anyone to sell me one. In fact, the dealer all but swore the thing didn't even exist - until I showed them a picture of it. RN, Atlantic British, NO ONE sells them. And I have had 3 people offer to pull them out of a parts truck, but then I never hear from them again! It is frustrating.

Remove your door trim, You will see the Door lock rod has a 2nd rod attached with a small metal block. Loosen the small hex screw on the other, (sorter rod) not the Door lock rod.
You can now slip the shorter rod up or down just a little to fine tune your door lock actuator.

Or that's how it is on my D1

Similar Problem

Hi all,

I had a similar problem, '94 300 TDi, The key would open and lock the door but the remote wouldn't. The button would pop up and then slip down a bit. It was not the actuator but a very small circlip in the lock/handle mechanism somewhere. Apparently these wear out and once replaced the thing woks like new (and a lot cheaper than a new actuator). If in doubt you can get the actuator checked at a LR specialist just to be sure.

Hope this helps,

Andy

Thanks for all the replies-I was planning on buying the actuator, but it appears that is not the culprit. I will tear into the door this weekend and see what I find. The remote opens all the doors, it's just that the locks slips down just enough when I pull the handle (inside and outside) and prenvents the door from opening.
Also, when I opened the doors using the remote in the past, the amber lights would illumiinate for a couple of seconds . . . I noticed that a day before the lock failed, it stopped doing this. Any ideas? It's almost like it was telling me it was about to go.

The door handle problem is definitely the circlip spring - exactly the same problem on mine. As to the lights - no idea but I seem to remember seeing something on the RAVE CD about this.

Hope this helps,
