Front Driveshaft Died

I have been warned since I bought my DII to buy the GBR greasable front driveshaft as an upgrade. However, there always seemed to be 'just one more' project I wanted to do first. Well, I just got lucky. I noticed a loud whine coming from the vicinity of my transfer case/driveshaft while accelerating and thought to myself 'that isn't right'. Turns out, it wasn't right and I caught it just in time (before it came apart at a couple of hundred RPM and disintegrated the underside of my rig). :D

Just wondering if anyone else has had theirs fail on them (stock front driveshaft) and at what mileage.

I'm in the same boat as you. Started getting a constant chirping sound from the driveline somewhere. When I looked the U-joint in the CV joint was shot and just barely hanging on. This was on a 00' DII with 60k. Just got my driveshaft back today, with new spicer greasable U-joints from GBR.

Mine started chirping around 60K miles. Replaced with a rebuilt driveshaft from GBR and all is still good at 84K miles.

I have a 3" OME lift.

Update: extended warranty company went the extra mile and bought me a new GBR driveshaft to replace the stock LR one. Sweet. Usually I have to fight them tooth and nail on this kind of crap...my guess is they saw the light and realized they would be paying for a new one in 40k more miles if they bought a stock LR 'ungreasable'.

my d2 made it to 145k , vibrated for a day and then replaced .....

I have 60k on mine right now, and I'm curious about the front shaft. I was underneath playing around with it, and there is absolutely no play in at all, and to the best of knowledge, the u-joints look fine. Is it possible that I'm missing something, or are these signs of u-joints that are still going strong? The truck is still stock. I do have a vibration in the front end that I haven't pinpointed yet, but it only happens at about 50 mph, and it's really only noticeable when you apply the brakes.

Joe, sounds like you might have a warped brake rotor.

As the DS is concerned, I'd take it off and rebuild it with servicable u-joints (dana-spicer) and then get a new center kit put in. If you don't do it yourself make sure that whoever does it knows how to do the center kit properly. Also explain to them that the DS is right next to the catalytic converter and it needs extra grease inside the center kit.

Mine just died,,, at @65k. Replacing w/ SG.

Don't know if SG has changed their drive shafts ( haven't looked in a while ) but, I had ordered drive shafts from them for my d1 about 2 and a 1/2 years ago and I returned them due to they weren't greasable u-joints. You might want to call and verify that if you haven't already.

Mine about shook the fucking paint off my rig at 40,000. Replaced under warranty.

Note to self: fabricate shield from aluminum to stop A/C from dripping on driveshaft.

Mine made it to 60k w no lift. Had it rebuilt locally w/ greasable spicer joints for ~$125.00

Jeez, I thought the D2 shaft was better than the D1 and people are throwing these things out like brake rotors. I guess thats a planned upgrade at the end of warranty.

Rebuild it with greasable u-joints and a new centering kit and it's just as good as the common replacement drive shafts.
