Front Driveshaft moves and makes a "clunk" when shifting from Park to D or R

I have a 1996 Disco and it was making this clunk, so while someone shifted I looked underneath and...

the front drive shaft moves when you shift the trans. from park to drive or rev.

Also with the truck in park if you wiggle the front driveshaft it moves more than it should.... what is wrong to me it looks like something in the Transfer case, and just to let you know all the U Joints are good!!

Please help!

Thanks

welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Rover.
they all do it, some more than others, get use to it as the warranty period on your truck is long over.
it's a combo of lots of gear backlash and poorly machined gears in the transfer case.
it's a pain,
but they all do it, just learn to shift around it :D

I've seen this question asked so many times... LR needs to put it in the owner's manual.

All Discos are clunkers, man.

manual addendum

we should reate a manual addendum that way we could all snap it intoo the back of our little leather bound 3 ring binder manual. it would be a great download for new members. we could harvest all the FAQ's and bullet them out. format them for the book size and it would be a great resource.

i coud see it going like this:

Chapter 1 : common thunks, thuds, squeeks, whines and rattles. what do they mean, and where do they come from, and how screwed am i now?

Chapter 2: The (IAC)/stepper motor: what does it do or not do? and how to locate it.

chapter 3: What are the best shocks/springs for my Disco?

Chapter 4: Random Multiple misfire: what does that mean and where is my check book?
subchapter: what is "Seafoam" and where can i get it? myth or miracle does it really work?

Chapter 5: What type of oil should i use? synth or dyno?

Chapter 6: Rear brake squeel and why it happens.

Chapter 7: Alternators. rebuilt, new OEM, mean green, etc.

chapter 8: Can i wheel my disco stock?

Chapter 9: should i have just bought a 4-runner?

this was supposed to be funny. But i seriously think we could put something together like this as a download or a straight HTML page.

That's a great idea. :D It'd be a great resource to have. I don't have the technical expertise on the rovers, but I for one wouldn't mind lending a hand on the computer end of the project if it ever comes together.

all my technical know how has come form dweb so i am not the mechanical guru to put it all together. maybe once the archives get put back up we could do soem kind of dweb poll where members could all search out and suggest the topics. maybe we can get some volunteers from dweb who have the right mechanical expertise to lend a hand in the gathering of information and technical details..

LOL, Peter, that list comes directly form all the posts i have myself made. I think it is sort of the trial by fire thing all rover owners have to go through.

by the way i have a new chapter to add:

chapter 10: Replacing spongy coolant hoses as preventative maintenance.

i added this chapter this evening. Right as s i pulled into my driveway this evening my wife says to me in a curious tone of voice, ' is that smoke coming from the engine?" my reaction of course was somewhat less than calm. i parked it, popped hte hood and there was a small split on the front edge of the top radiator coolant return hose, right after the elbow. a nice bright green 1/8" stream was shooting 5 feet in front of the truck, and spewing all over the engine compartment. i tied a thick rag over the split once the pressure beagn to ebb. coolant was all over the place. a total f'ing mess.

maybe there should also be a section in the addendum that gives you a mantra to repeat to yourself over, and over, and over. "i love my rover, i love my rover, i love my rover" now just repeat this 500 or 600 times a day and that way you will condition yourself to not feel the sting everytime you need to open your wallet.

so everyone repeat after me, "i love my rover, i love my rover, i love my rover......."
