I have a 1996 disco with 70k pampered miles, the front end recently started shaking a high speed curves, and straight away when bumpy, this is second of three discos I've owned in the last two years that developed this problem. has any one else had this problem with their disco, have you been able to solve it? My daughter has a Jeep 1993 grand cherokee laredo that does the same thing - the jeep boards refer to it as the death wobble. Please Help!

my fix

on my 96 SE7 I had shaking at speed when I hit a bump in the road, it turned out to be the two bolts that hold down the right side of the steering damper bracket, 1 was loose and the other was missing, two new bolts and all is right again, I had planned on having the damper and ball joints replaced at the dealer and after 10 min. they came back with just the bolt issue as the only problem, so check those bolts, other than that it will be ball joints, bushings etc. etc....

Had a similar problem with my 97 D1 but it only happened occasionally. Would "shake on smooth or irregular pavement. Turned out to be a loose panhard bolt. Pretty scary condition.

Have your daughter (or someone you really trust) get behind the wheel with you under the front end. Have them turn the wheel back and forth. Watch the travel of the "moving parts". Mine was pretty obvious, you could actually see the panhard rod move.

Good luck,

I had a similar issue I replace with an OME steering damper and they all went away, this was after I replace the track rod ends. I am not sure if the OME was a band aid for something worse but I dont think it is since the truck only has ~46k miles..

It usually is the steering stabilizer. But it is a good idea to chek the track bar and tie rod ens as well before replacing it. Same on the Jeep.

I run no stabilizer and no issues, so I dout that is the problem. It may work as a "band aid" though. Panhard rod bolts or bushing maybe the problem. Or, could be a busted belt in a tire. It may be worth your time to swap the front tires to the rear and see if that corrects your problem. Does the truck pull to one side? Another issue could be the King Pin's. They may need to be ajusted. In either case, check all the steering componets and make sure they are tight, i.e. tie rod ends, pan hard rod, play in the front wheels or bearings etc... IF you are running HD steering links, make sure the Jam Nuts are tight too.

Death wobble a very good analogy.
Ok the familiar Rover wobble.
Can be caused by the following and not necessary in this order
1. Steering damper shot or loose
2. Steering damper bushings shot.
3. Worn front suspension Bushes
3. Panhard rod bushes
4. Swivel housing preload needs tightening
5. Wheel bearings are loose
6. Steering box Backlash need adjusting (i.e. to much play)
7. Tie rod ends loose or shot
8. Ball joint connecting the steering drop arm to the drag link. Loose or shot.
9. Wheel alignment out (sometimes)
10. Imbalanced tires or bad tires
It is going to be one of or some of or all of I've seen, these things Period.
A new Steering damper can sometime just cover up a problem elsewhere. And then you'll be in for a new Damper again sooner than you need one.

This I say from experience I can?t think of anything else that will cause this rover characteristic.

I had similar problem on my 130. On the highway when I hit an expansion joint the front end would shake uncontrolably until I stopped. I changed the the shocks and coils and the problem went away. My old shocks were totaly blown. I think when I hit a bump the front end would start bouncing and the shocks being bad would not dampen the bounce.
