The petrol 4 gets around 15-18 mpg - the diesel gets mid 20's.

The only one I ever really checked carefully was my '74 88. 18mpg with the Rochester carb conversion. This was in the 70's, when petrol was better :p

On the highway, I just clocked 17mpg. That's with a stock rebuilt Solex carb, 235/85-16 BFG MT tires, no hi-ratio transfer case or overdrive and 87 octane gas. I was pleasantly surprised, considering I thought my mpg was more like 12-13. So it is relatively economical for an old truck.

The flipside to that pleasant surprise is that it has taken way too much money to get it where it is.

Summarizing, you can't make the argument that you need it because it's economical. That argument is lost when you consider repairs, upgrades, maintenance, etc. Just say you need it because you said so!

14MPG in the city... I still only fill up once-twice a month. Not very economical, but sure is fun!

Yeah, land rovers arent economical.

I have owned my current on for a year. Discounting purchase price....
I bet that with all the money I have had to spend vs the miles I have driven my cost per mile is probably over 20 dollars!

I've seen as high as 27 mpg in my 109 on the highway - freshly rebuilt diesel and running with the Fairey overdrive engaged at about 60 mph. Its so tired now that it won't do that anymore.

Hey Jack, for about how long did the good mileage last on your diesel? I'm going to rebuild mine as well.

I rebuilt the engine when the truck had around 200,000 miles on it - I had to bore the block out to the maximum size overbore pistons available and had the whole engine balanced (diesel you ask? - it makes it run much better) The thing ran pretty good for the next 100,000- 125,000 miles then the clearances around the pistons started to open up gain and it started smoking a little. The cam chain is probably stretched a bit too. The truck now has around 375,000 miles on it and it's got a broken transmission, blows blue smoke and needs another rebuild. I'd like to find a later 2.5 liter 5 main bearing engine to put in it but this project is on the back burner until I finish my Porsche 356 and the 88" Land Rover.

eh, depends on how well the odometer is working at any given moment

:)

oh, and (when it's running) the 3 liter crossflow gets 13 with a tailwind. That's averaging 75 though...

Just curious what kind of mileage you guys get out of your 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engins in your series trucks.
