Fuel Pump - How Do You Know?

I had another thread a short time ago about my fuel pump connector in my 96' Disco having been loose and arcing. I believe I have rigged the connector so that it is working, but I'm wondering how does one know if the fuel pump itself is on the way out? I searched through the threads and it seems some people eluded to the pump going gradually and others saying it just goes and that's it.

I have the carpet and hatch accessible and I can hear the pump- when the connector was bad I would leave the key in accessory and wiggle the electrical connector till I heard the pump- but is there any sign that a pump could be on its' last legs?

I don't want to get stranded again and if the pump is going I would like to order a new one now rather than later. (It will take a few days to get where I'm ordering from).

Any suggestions?

I don't have a fuel pressure guage at the moment - will any standard one do or does LR have a special fitting? And what would I expect to get - pressure wise?

Having the connection shorting out may have shortened the life of the pump, but it would be hard to say.

Any fuel pressure gauge would work. Nothing special about them. (I am sure someone will say you have to have snapon or something though)

I have 112k, on my '97 and it has original pump, I plan to run it till it quits...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Fail-Proof way to tell.

If it's electric, and it says LAND ROVER anywehre on it......It's going to fail shortly. ;)

My 96 became more frequently intermittant. Pressure measured good, right up until the end. Connector was burned out and the insulation was melted off the wires. I was in denial until it was completely gone. I think I read somewhere here on the Web that the avg life expectancy is 115K miles. Mine crapped out ~125K. YMMV. Just order your pump now so you're not stuck waiting for a parts delivery. Sounds like you have time to shop around a bit longer.
