Recall Is Real...here's the actual info..

This is from www.nhtsa.gov (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration):

Make: LAND ROVER
Model: DISCOVERY I Year : 1997 (**It is more than just 97, that is the model year I have. I belive it's 94-98**)
Manufacturer: LAND ROVER
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 04V203000
Recall Date: APR 05, 2004
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
Potential Number Of Units Affected: 45267

Summary:
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, A STRESS CRACK CAN DEVELOP IN THE PLASTIC FUEL TANKS.
Consequence:
CRACKS WHICH CONTINUE TO PROPAGATE CAN ULTIMATELY RESULT IN SIGNS OF LIQUID FUEL FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHEN FILLING THE TANK, PARTICULARLY IF OVERFILLING IS ATTEMPTED. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING OCTOBER 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800-637-6837
Notes:
LAND ROVER RECALL NO. B156. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION?S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

I called Land Rover Customer Service, and they are of course aware, but the Owner Notification Process hasn't started yet, so the dealers may not know of it. This should help that.

Called my local LR dealer and he was not aware of this recall, but he told me he would check into it. And yes my service Guy takes good care of me even though I hardly ever take my vehicle in for service there. Okay, the only time my Disco has been to the Dealer other than the parking lot was for a rust issue that didn't cost me a penny.

The recall is for real. The last conversation I had with Land Rover North America is that notices will mailed out after october. The original defect was found 2+ years ago and a formal notice was sent to the NHTSB around april 2004. You can check the recall at the NHTSB website. I was told the delay has to do with parts. They need to build their inventory up to handle the repair orders.

Great.. I better start spraying PB Blaster on my gastank skidplate bolts now.. As long as that thing has been on there I'll probably need to cut it off.
