So my b-in law gave me two Kimber 1911s to take to the range Saturday and run some rounds through. One was a 3' Ultra carry and the other a 4"Custom Pro Raptor II both in blue. I also took along a Walther P22 and a .44cal 1858 bp revolver.
This was the first time out with the 1858, it was a blast to shoot. Not having any cloth wads I used bore butter over the balls but the day was so hot that the butter was a mess to use (the cylinder started to look like I was buttering corn). Also found that I needed to give the primers a little pinch so they'd stay on while shooting, lol.
The P-22, found that one of my clips was furkapta. Went through half of a bulk box with only 2 bad rounds. lots of fun to shoot and cheap to feed.
For the Kimbers, the 4" (nib) had failures to eject with 3 different brands of name brand ammo (2 ball, 1 jhp). Its going to be sent back to the factory. The 3" compact worked flawlessly. I put ~200 rds of ball and 21 rounds of jhp through with no ftf or fte. It also grouped well. I was leaning towards buying a 3" anyways and now its mine.
Anyways, for cc of the 3" 1911, I could use some suggestions on makers of good leather or plastic IWB and OWB holsters and 1/2 clip holsters. Sorry for the long post but it was a fun day at the range.

Curious to hear what you thought. I've got both. The ultra is completely awesome and I haven't put more than a box or so though the pro since I bought the 3".

The 4" Pro was nib and really nice looking piece, slide and trigger were very smooth, but ended being a disapointment. It fte'ed every round with 3 different manuf. (ball Rem & Fed, Win jhp) ammos all 230 gr. Told my b-in-law it make a nice single shot paperweight. He will be sending it to Kimber for repair.
I ended up buying the Ultra (it unlike the Pro had a po). First impression, trigger was light. Muzzle flip very manageable, felt that the recoil is directed more in line with your arms (unlike a friends baby g---k .40, which feels like it going to rotate the muzzle back at your face). Didn't have a ball of flame like some compact 9mm we tried out. Right now, I'm thinking of getting a set of slim grips for it. But first a good holster.

That's funny how that worked out. It took me 6 months, 1000 rounds, and a recoil spring change to get my 4" pro working right. It was never as bad as what you described, but it was always finicky until I ran a bunch of different ammo through it and changed the spring rate.

My 3" ultra was flawless out of the box. Both guns were purchased brand new. A lot of shit gets talked on the reliability of any 1911 shorter than 4.25" but my experience with the Kimber 3" piece has been perfect. It hung up on the lip of one JHP the day I bought it and it's never done anything like that since.

On holsters, I've used several for the 1911 and my favorite is a boring ol' Galco. It rides high and is small and light. I'm not a fan of Kydex.

It will be interesting to find out what kimber says about the 4". Most likely i'll start with a leather and then perhaps a kydex.
I did buy a take down tool from ndzperformance.com Instead of using the L-shaped rod its a piece of plastic that slips over the guide rod. The one I got has both a short and long plastic barrel. The long one lines the slide up with the takedown notch, the short one puts less tension on the recoil spring making it easier to take the spring assembly apart.

If your looking for custom leather try Dan Parmenter, his web site is customgunleather.com. The site is kind of hard to get around but his leather work is fantastic.

In-law just dropped off 2 iwb holsters he had kicking around, that fit the Ultra. One's a Don Hume and the other a Elmer McEvoy "The Leather Arsenal" holster.
