"Now I have my eyes on this Terrafirma bumper and might try to make some type of rendition of it. I will have to look more in depth at it and see if my welding and fab skills are up for it."

Judging by the current modifications, I'm going to go out on a limb and say.... they aren't.

"Sorry to burst your bubble dude, but your DIY projects look like crap. Thankfully you can just take that rack off and throw it in the trash, but you completely ruined the front end of a perfectly good LR."

Oh man that's bad. My truck in stock form made an appearance though on page 2, showing off my Thule roof rack. :)

How are those working out for you?

Im trying to figure out a non-$1000 roof rack solution.

There is a 1-star amazon review that isnt a fan of the super high thule...

Super High foot, very BAD idea, October 21, 2009
By Richard C. Layne, III

My rating is based on the design of the "Super High" 953 foot only, I imagine the "low" and perhaps even the "high" would be just fine. The build quality was absolutely top notch, and assembly/installation was very easy.

What is a problem is putting this long of a "lever" on to something so fragile as a rain gutter (and I have very strong rain gutters). There is simply no way to do this safely and effectively. After doing a little searching it seems most folks who buy these go an average of 6-12 months before damage to their vehicle occurs from the forces applied by such a high foot design with such a narrow base. I would not trust it to carry a package of toilet paper. Thule should have known better, they should NEVER have made the "Super High" version of these feet.

The supper high is for Land Rover Discovery and Defenders. (and even the supper high leaves only about an inch and 1/2 between the rack and the roof. I have the Sportrack version. Just curious, why would you want to use the super high feet on a car with a low roof line? It would only increase your center and put more wind under your cargo.

Anyone remember that video of the failed recovery attempt in Malaysia where the hitch failed and took out a bunch of people in a crowd of onlookers? (I can't seem to find the link.) Maybe that douche needs to watch that a couple times so he understands the potential consequences of his halfassed fabrication attempt.

They work great. I only use them about 2-3 times per year though. Mainly for canoe trips. They seem quite solid to me. I've never thought of the Disco's rain gutters as flimsy either. I don't know what that guy's issue was but I don't see a problem with the feet or gutters. Personally I wouldn't make a full roof rack(SD style) using them but thats more from an aesthetics standpoint.

I also use a Thule 953 "super high feet" setup to clear the raised back portion of my Disco's roof. It works well for my needs. The contact area of the foot in the gutter is reasonably long so I'm not worried about it "levering". The most I've ever carried on this setup is about 200 pounds.

But to the original thread: that huge tubular bumper could be used as storage space if the ends were threaded and capped with PVC pipe lids. That would be a great place to store other essential equipment, like a Hi-Lift handle, tow strap, spare cutting blades for the angle grinder...
