I am planning to get a Garmin 60CSx. Does anyone know how much space in megabytes the Garmin USA Topo maps and the Garmin City Navigator maps take up? I want to see if I can fit them all on 1 card. Is there a maximum size card the unit can take?...I found some 6GB Micro SD cards.

Thanks for any help!

you want to download the entire USA base data onto your 60? i have not been using the MapSource software and have only been using my Delorme Topo. i just like it a bit more. i don't remember for sure if the MapSource software has levels of "detail". if so that will determine to some degree how much you can download.
usually i just load a region that i know i will not be leaving 99% of the time.

No place special.
I have a 60CSx and don't believe it supports the microSDHC (high capacity) format as it wasn't in use when the unit was designed and first sold. When I bought my handheld last year 1 gig was the largest capacity card available at the time with 2 gigs coming out at the end of the year. I have City Nav, Topo West and National Parks West for California, Arizona and Nevada loaded onto a 1 gig card, total memory used is about 350 megs. This leaves a lot of extra space for waypoint and route storage. I'm not entirely certain of this, but it seems to me that the more data you try to load onto the cards the more you'll delay your access times. At the level I'm using I don't notice any problems other than a minor system hang from time to time.

I realise that maybe I should have been a bit more clear. For the three software versions I list I loaded the data for California, Arizona and Nevada. That is what totaled 350 megs. For what it's worth City Navigator has a new version for '08 now so look for that.

I just went into my MapSource on my hard drive to figure out what the memory is for the entire United States:

Garmin MapSource City Navigator: 1330.00 MB

Garmin MapSource TOPO: 1753.70 MB

Keep in mind that my MapSource versions are not the current 2008 editions.

Also, your unit should come with the base maps already installed, so you'll just need to put the regions that you want more detail on the data cards.

'Hope that helps.
