um, shitty? I have 32s get around 10 if that. If gas is a problem you should have never bought a land rover or modified it.

I have 32s as well and get about 11-12 in town. was getting better with 31s but the need for bigger tires is all consuming. sucks being young with high ins premiums. been there done that. good luck!

Cheers, Andy

Do you need that roof rack?

That will save you about 2mpg
Change your O2 sensors
Get a High Flow Muffler
A snorkel (cold air ) will give you slightly better mpg as well.

Those 4 things and 33s might break even with where you are at now.

istead of selling it, but a cheap used dual sport for around campus and town, youll get about 60 mpgs and lots of people (girls) will be asking for rides into town or the mall or wherever.

Amen to that, Lost in Boston.

I have a Virago that I use to putter around Boulder. Even in the winter the weather here is relatively mild...

Definitely something to think about if you don't really want to give up your Rover.

Yeah i can relate to this. Im 19 and in college and have a 75mile commute from my house to school. The resteraunt where i work is right over the TN line and is almost a 100 miles from school. I just got my lift on and wanted bigger tires as well but ahah i get sick of the thought of what my MPG will be. I thought about selling mine a few times, but i dont have the heart to do it. I'll just tuff it out threw college with the big green machine.

Your mileage will be better than you think. You have to allow for more distance travelled than on odo due to larger tyres. Prob 12% more min .
29/33 x 100 or something like that.

99 D2, just under 70K miles
K&N air filter element
Snorkel (Safari)
Flowmaster (50SUV)
Powerchip
33s (255/85 BFG MTs)
4.10 Gears

I get anywhere from 310-360 miles per tank depending on where I'm driving (about 23 gallons usable).

This biggest difference I've really noticed so far is how hard I plant the go-pedal. Kind of like driving a race car, early off, late on and then smooth everywhere else. Makes a tremendous difference on these beasties.

Bazzle, from the factory the LR is about 8 to 10% off on the speedo, so when you add slightly larger tires you are acually going to show more acurate.

My D1 with stock 235/70/16 was almost 10mph off at 60. With 245/75/16 (new) it was almost dead on. Now that they have 25-30k on them they are again off by 5mph at 60.

Back to the main part of the thread, if you want better fuel economy buy a set of extra rims for just street or off road, and run factory size tires. That should get you back to somewhere reasonable, if you take off the roof rack.

Go buy an on Toyota pickup truck and drive the crap out of it. It's what I used for the daily college commute and kept the DII for weekends and wheeling. That's the biggest mod you can get for your LR, a different car.

thanks for all the replies everyone...it has a dumped magnaflow muffler on it, and the roof rack looks awesome, but maybe ill take it off to see if it gets better mpg. but what i really dont get is why an underpowered 4.0 gets such horrible mpg stock

If you want better mileage take the rack off, if you don't take it off and keep it for looks then really there is no point to what you are saying at all. Think about it.

That is very, very true.
After I've taken off the British Pacific half-rack, together with both stock cross-bars, I've got used to see 15-17mpg in a '96 D1, vs. formerly common 12.5-14.
