I also have a an old school rte heavy ass gas tank skid. As new.

Have you tried a local scrap yard?
Depending how much this adds up to be you may want to consider a Rock Armor fuel tank skid. I've seen one in person and they're good. If they mount like my Columbia Overland skid it replaces the stock strap. They're on ebay for $180 shipped.

Get the Columbia Overland gas tank aluminum skid plate. It replaces the stock bracket. I love mine on my 1991 RRC Hunter. Fits RRC and D1. Mine fit perfect. They even brought it to Overland Expo last May for me.
