Lately, I?ve notice a noise which I can only describe as when a vacuum cleaner is clogged (trying to intake the same amount of air through a smaller opening); or as if a turbo has just been triggered.
This occurs through all RPMs but it is more audible as the RPMs increase, to the point where I can hear it even at highway speeds.
Initially, I blamed the air filter I bought from a local auto parts store. But the noise remains even with a different filter.
The Disco runs smooth and fuel consumption is normally low at around 13mpg combined. There is a ticking valve noise which has been present since I bought the truck 4 years ago, and hasn?t gotten worse (though it still bothers me).
While the truck runs smooth, I feel ?it just might be my imagination- that it takes is just a bit longer to get up to speed.
Any ideas as to what is causing the ?turbo noise? and the possible loss in performance?
Thank you

In the bunker
You could try this: crawl underneath your truck & bang on the catalytic converters with your fist or a rubber mallett. If it sounds like something is loose in there, the catalyst may be coming apart, restricting your exhaust. However, most of the time I have seen this happen, the primary simptom has been lack of power at wide open throttle.

I'll have a go at banging the catalytic converters and see if there is an abnormal noise, thanx
