Ive heard that a heavier weight gear oil is best for a Detroit Locker. Is it safe to run 85w140 istead of the recommended lighter weight for a stock diff? Ive been running this over the last couple of days around town with no highway or highspeed driving. Concerned that the heavier weight might not get rid of the heat as well as the lighter oil and possible cause trouble.

Any thoughts on this before I hit the interstate?

hi I ran 85W-140 penrite limslip in my arb locker not knowing that arb put it in. Other arb branches recommend the lighter 85W-90. But they both protect on the freeway as i do 100km aday.

always use what the the builders propose 75w140 resist to more heat that a 75w90
the W stands for winter the first grade 75 is for viscocity a low tempetures and the 90 or 140 is for the heat at running tempetures. Some are GL5 and some are GL4 always use what the dealer recommends no mater what everybody tells you. GL5 and GL4 are different in the sense that EP stands for extreme pressure and one has twice the amount than the other and has additives that will attack white metals. :)

I was using an 80w90 oil in my Detroit Locker and it was very noisy. Changed to an 85w140 oil since about a year now and since then the Detroit Locker is running much smoother especially on highways and on road use.
