Any reason I cannot just use regular off the shelf synthetic gear oil in the differentials? I don't have the fancy locker. Also, what about the transfer case?

Also, there are lots of posts that you shouldn't fill the diff until the oil comes out the filler hole, that you should put the exact amount in instead. Why? What might it hurt to fill it with more oil?

Regular 75/W90 is fine in the front and rear diffs as long as you don't have a locker. You do need to use the correct fluid in the transfer box because it has a friction modifier in it that makes it more "slippery." Without it the center diff will remain locked.

I have probably filled at least 200 LR3 diffs, and I've filled every one until it spills out. The only Land Rover that it is important to fill it to the exact level is the 03-05 Range Rover, because it will shoot out of the breather and look like a cam cover leak.
