I'm just curious as to where the gearing difference is between a discovery 1 and a D90, both with R380. Whats different about the drivetrain? Is there a different final gear ratio? The transmission and transfer case are the same, right? Thanks, Dave

AFAIK, the only difference is the 1.2:1 hi-range in the Disco transfer case vs. the 1.4 gear in the Defender transfer case ..... curiously just about right to make up for the difference in o.e. tire sizes, no? :)

right, I guess the 4.1 ring gear is an easier and cheaper fix for a discovery compared to a new transfer case. What's AFAIK, by the way?

AsFarAsIKnow :)

BTW, the 4.10s in my '94 D1 make the 235/85's more bearable....kept the 1.2 in the transfer case...the 4.10s are efective in both hi and low range.

Decents are more comfortable since the switch to 4.10s

By golly Ron, you're right.

I always thought the Defenders had the 1.4 gears. Dunno why, but George (RDS) always had them listed, and Rob Dassler does rebuild some too.

Hmmph, learn something every day :)

Think the ol TDI had 1.4s but they went to 1.2 some time ago

edit the TD5 still has the 1.4 box. Ditto for the few 300 tdi vehicles they still build for countries prefering that engine

which unfortunately is ending this year with the closing of the plant here in Brasil.

They shut down South African production as well, centralizing everything in the UK including the 300 tdi......Lots of changes coming with the Defender next year......say goodbye to the TD5 for starters.....
