Gearing questions

I did a search but could not find what I was looking for. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I am currently running a 99 D1 with 2" lift and 265's. I am thinking about going with 4:10 gears and trutrac / detroit combo.

Questions.

1. Will I notice a big power diff? Low range is fine but high range is hurting. I do alot of interstate driving. Sometimes 1000 miles a week. 4:10's still ok?

2. I have always complained that the trans. shifts too early and have heard that since the speedo will be off due to the gears that the trans will shift earlier then it does now. How do we make the trans shift later or did I hear wrong?

3. The biggest tire I would ever run is a 33. Will the rear axle shafts hold up with mild abuse?

Thanks

4:10s are the way to go if running 33"s. Will the rear stock axles hold up? No! not if your locked up and off-roading. Ask me how I know. On the highway probably ok

I was hoping the rear axles would hold a 33 MT. What about the front?

What part of East Texas are you from? I have family in Tyler.

if your axle breaks your DT will go with it, so upgrade your rear shafts.

Front your fucked either way til rovertracks comes out with there shit. At least when they break your TT is OK.

I have a similar question I just got a '97 Disco right now it's pretty stock and the previous owner put 245/70-R16's on it which a little bigger then the stock but still small plus they are not off road capable anyway. Right now I'm thinking about a 2" Spring lift and I was thinking of going with a 235/85-R16 although they are a good bit taller then the stock tires and I'll probably need to trim the rear wheel well. I don't really want to go with anything wider as I like the narrower tire for mud.

But my main concern is with the gearing I'd like to stick with stock gears I'm not really worried about major power as I drove a Series II for 4 years and was fine with it's power. I'm mainly thinking about strain etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Buddy

Buddy I ran stock gears with 235/85-16s a 2" lift and a rear arb locker with MT tires for a couple of years. No problems. down on power but got me there. Its when I went bigger on tires and lift and started doing harder trails and rocks that the shafts broke. I now have HD shafts in the rear axle and no problems. I need to upgrade teh front now as I put an arb there too.

i've got 33x10.50x15 running on stock gears. Low range there is still good power, high you can tell, but there is still enough throttle to maintain 65-80, going up hill you can even still maintain speed, floored @ 5500 RPM :)

I sure could use some lower gears for rock crawling though... soon to come.

Andrew... did you do anything with your speedo gear? Does your trans shift too early? Did the gears help or hurt the way your trans. shifts?

My grandparents (the Biscoes) owned a farm in Bullard and had a house on Lake Palistine before they passed away. Beautiful area.

What about your trans.? Did you change anything? Does it shift ok?

Trans is fine. Seems to shift good. My speedo is of 6-7 mph to fast. So I mostly use the gps for measuring speed. Bill at GBR can give you some great insight on the gearing thing. He did my diffs, lockers, gears and drive shafts. He'll give you some good advice.

I've been to Bullard many time and lake Palistine. Love the area. Texas is my second favorite state. Alaska being the first.

I have a 96 D1 with 4.11 from GBR. They make a big difference when you're going up hill more than anything. And as Justin says, if you are planning to go with DT lockers then you should get the HD axles. If the stock axles go then your DT will break with it. I got all my things from Bill at Great Basin Rovers. He sends you the 3rd member really to installed with the DT and 4.11 Gears. As far as the front I would not worry about the axles, I have the true track in the front and never had any problems. By the way, I'm running 33's MT with a 4" lift. The car has enough power.

Does anyone make a speedo gear to correct the speedo? I really do care if its accurate or not, I just want the trans. to shift latter then it does now.

Can I tighten the kickdown cable?
