I need to buy a smart phone in the next month or so. Im needing the ability to check email and I dont know much about them and they all look the same. Ive heard good and bad things about the Blackberry, but nothing about the blackjack. some browsing capability. Been looking at the Blackberry pearl and the i607Blackjack. Any opinions or advice?

All my co-workers have the "Q" phone and seem to like it. However, it Looks complicated, and I'm not too fond of having a Garth Brooks bluetooth earpiece on all day so I hope I can hang onto my dinosaur of a phone.

I've got the Blackjack and like it. Does everything that I need it to do (including mail, internet, bluetooth [if you want it], etc) and I can still put it up to my ear and not feel like I'm holding a brick. The battery life is great, and they give you a second and a spare charger so you can always have a charged battery.

I have the ppc 6700, and now that the quirks are gone, it works preety good. I now have the extended battery, and it became too heavy and too bulky, I would not recomend it if size is important to you, but really good features, the screen is big enough to work as a gps device, but ia have not yet played with that yet

Not to hijack a thread, but what is the advantage of the treo 700 over the 650?

I've been looking at getting one so that I don't have to carry my Palm Lifedrive and a phone. The 650 is a lot cheaper through my provider.

The treo is definitely a possibility as I have a palm tungsten and might be able to transfer my address book. I had heard the treos werent as good at browsing or email as the blackberry or blackjack.

I've got the Cingular 8125 (which is the Cingular branded HTC Wizard, which you can find from different providers)... I use it for Corporate Exchange push email, contacts, and calendering via Active Sync. I like the capability of it with 2 complaints:

- It's slow to respond to button pushes, like making, and hanging up calls (frustrating)

- Battery life is pretty weak, espescially when I overclock the CPU to avoid the first issue.

I've had a Treo 600, and LOVED it (before the company changed). I wanted a 650, and now want a 700p... I used to consider myself a Palm die-hard.

Besides the form-factor of the device, the real difference on the phone is really the OS (Windows Mobile vs. PalmOS). IMO, PalmOS is more usable with less clicks and stylus use to do common tasks. Windows Mobile is a bit more cumbersome with multiple clicks to do stuff.

That being said, I've been VERY happy with the Windows Mobile version of IE compared to browsers on the Palm. More native display of pages without having to purchase a heavyweight Opera. The Outlook client is pretty good as well, and the integrated calendering works well (as long as you don't want to dial a phone number from within an appointment!!).

When I had the Treo, it seemed like everything was an add-on. You had to buy Documents To Go to read Word and Excel files (read-only). The email client was pretty basic, and you had to buy a better version (like SnapperMail). All the free IM clients were crap, and the good ones were expensive. This may have changed lately, so I advise you check what comes out of the box, or as a trial vs what is 'built-in'. The GPRS modem integration with a laptop on the Palm was disabled and required a somewhat expensive program on the device and PC to enable it.

On the Windows Mobile device, all the Office productivity software is there already, as well as MSN mobile. You can edit Office docs natively too (though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that given that if you are in that position, you probably have a laptop too). The Bluetooth and USB GPRS/Edge/whatever modem on the Windows Mobile device just works.

In any case, I like my Windows Mobile device as long as I'm not getting frustrated and start mashing buttons, coz it just goes from slow to slower when that happens, which makes me more frustrated.

If I get the chance, I'll definately look into the Palm 700 series, and make a determination on the OS (700w vs 700p) depending on what comes out of the box... mostly because the Windows Mobile OS isn't as bad as I thought it would be (or I'm getting soft), and has pleasantly suprised me.

...and all that being said, I've heard and read VERY good things about the Blackjack, but have no personal experience to comment one way or the other... though the lack of the touch screen makes me a little skeptical.

I've got the blackjack and love it.

Which provider do you have/want to go with? Personally I would reccomend Cingular right now. IMHO best phones, best service iwth the new 3G service. Data speeds are very fast. I have the blackjack and also the Cingular 8525 and both hit about 1mb/s download speed.

I have the BB 8700 for work with the corporate setup and BlackJack for personal use. IMHO, I like the BlackBerry better as far as usage such as typing and app navigation. Both phones have most of the same capabilities, however the blackjack has the ability to take pics, store/play music. My BB uses the Edge network for internet while the blackjack uses 3G network which is faster.

I've heard good things about the Pearl and Treo, but I'll be holding out for the Iphone for sure!

Good luck with your selection- you can't go wrong with the different suggestions you've received thus far, just a matter of personal preference.

I have a Blackberry 7520 for my own phone and some POS alltel smart phone for my work phone.

Advantages:
Blackberry:
It Works. never had a problem with it
Push Email from BES as well as push email from blackberry.net
keyboard always there and have good feel
Nextel 2-way models (like mine)

SmartPhone:
looks like windows, so people are used to it
802.11b/g connectivity
can open some attachments (excel,word)
Cisco VPN client
Remote Desktop/HP iLO clients

Disadvantages:
Blackberry:
Only 3rd party support for using as a modem
BES restrictions can limit downloads

Smartphone:
it runs windows
802.11 kills batteries fast
touchscreen has no feel
mine locks up as much as a windows desktop
Outlook plugin is pull. your smartphone needs to be configured to go get your mail

As you can see, I prefer the BB. Everyone else at work only has a regular phone for their own phones, so they like the Smartphone.

I've got a PPC6700.. I love it. It does have it's quirks, but overall, it's a great phone.

I used to carry a PDA with me along with my cell, and having it unified is so much better.

The WM5 units have a ton of software out there, too. I've even used it as a gps receiver with a bluetooth gps unit.

i thrid the 6700. it's got built in wifi so if you're in a wifi zone, you can you the internet rather than chewing your data minutes. also use it as a in car nagivator and a chart plotter. there's a ton of programs you can use for it.
as it's a windows base os (i hate windows but it's the corporate standard :banghead: ) you can log into your computer at work if need be. minisd slot is awesome as you can now have a wack of tunes on it and use it as an mp3 player. excel, word etc all work on it too.
my 2 cents for what it's worth...
