I have a (read: my wife has a) jeep liberty. 2003 sport, 125k miles, has been trouble free for well over 10 years so besides the look and the emblem that says jeep, I cant really complain. sorry for long winded story.

until saturday. I believe it overheated and purged itself of coolant/water. My wife cannot tell me how long it ran before she shut it off, it was in a driveway idle. She says it wasnt too long, didnt notice any issues prior.

question is, water appeared to come from the back of engine, back where the coolant tank is. I am guessing there is an overflow hose or something, the rest of the coolant hoses were still in place and when pouring more water in, it has held on to it, does this make sense or should I be looking for another spot?

also, when i got it home it was running about 225 and I noticed the rad fan was not spinning so I hit it with a golf club and it kicked on. since then it has been kicking on at 221 consistently, like it should according to the manual. still seems hot to me, right? I am thinking the fan might have been rusted a bit (it is electric) and didnt turn on to cool engine so the water boiled over.

its the 3.7L jeep engine, if anyone has any advice or thoughts on what else to look for. I drove it today to work, 20 miles, ran fine, didnt lose water and ran about 201 on highway and when parked for 10 mins in lot I let it run and it got to 221 but cooled itself down. engine isnt knocking so I dont think she has blown the engine.

the 3.7 is a hunk of junk but its a fairly strong hunk of junk, i doubt you/your wife did any damage to it. i really cant recall if there is something towards the back of the motor that would "purge" the coolant besides a freeze plug. these motors will get warm if the fan isnt spinning, and 201F is normal running temp for the highway.

its a jeep, let it do it's thing.

thanks. since I posted this it has held on to the water, I have no clue where it purged the water before. certainly if it was a freeze plug it wouldnt be holding water now. since i got the fan to kick over it seems to kick over as it should, right at 219ish and per the manual that is exactly how it is programed.

all seems to be good. I know its junk but it has 125,000 and no previous issues, drives 5,000 a year, I just need it to hold up.
