General Thoughts on "Performance" Exhaust

Just wondering what people out there think of "Performance" exhausts like Magnaflow and Borla. I don't want to take the plunge (ie twice the price) on my D1 unless it's really worth it.

you cut those 2 lumps off before the muffler.

Unless you run your truck at high RPM all the time, the stock exhaust does everything you need. Other than performance, there is also the consideration of sound quality, which is a completely personal issue. I myself like a more unobtrusive exhaust note.

I've read some go with a Flow Master 50 Series muffler, and hack the resonator off and replace with just a pipe.

My Disco came set up like this, and no cats. It is quite loud and drones on the highway. I use mine more for off-road, so I guess it's all right there.

I've had a Borla on my D1 for 7 years now and it looks like it will last forever, even in the northeast. I bought it for long life, not for performance or sound. I disliked the extra sound enough to put a small muffler on the back. It's fine around town but annoying on the highway without the 2nd muffler.

Welded a flowmaster super 44 in place of stock muffler and eliminated rear muffler. Sounds like crap, no extra power but fits nice and tight up out of the way.

I've got one, but only out of frustration. I've wrapped three factory exhausts around the axle. The last time, I cut it off and drove straight to the performance shop. I told them to fucking fix it, and I told them how I wanted everything routed. They only had one muffler in stock.

So, now I've got a Flowmaster 40. :) I've had it for a while, and with the intelligent routing of the pipe, it really sounds smooth. More importantly, it's routed out the side of the rear, instead of straight out the back, where it would simply wrap around the axle again.

I haven't screwed it up yet, aside from crushing the end a bit. At least it didn't wrap around the axle again. I have to tell you, that little Flowmaster has held up pretty darn good for not being stainless. I can't tell you how many times I've had to weld little spots on the y-pipe. I've never had to touch the replacement system, though.

I mean to find out about that stainless cat and y-pipe kit that DAP sells. If it's not a piece of shit, it would be the cat's ass. I'm sick of rusty crap up there.

I'd have bought the Borla setup if it didn't run straight out the back. I may still do it and simply put another bend in it, but that seemed a bit of a butchery at the time, and I was frustrated and wanted it done that very second.

Cheers,

Kennith

I bought a Borla muffler for mine - forgot which one it is, but it's marginally louder than stock, is smaller, and is tucked out of the way for hitting the trail. It's not loud, and it's got a great tone. Going with a nicer muffler might make the difference between a Land Rover V8 sound and a rebel-flagged jacked up F-150 sound.

Blake I like the idea with how your exhaust is done, but it hangs a little low.

I have ordered a Goerlich Xlerator for our RRC, I will post more info when it is installed. I have a Borla with a turndown on one of my other trucks and have run a Flowtech Warlock, a Raptor and of course Flowmaster 40 series on several other trucks. My Tdi truck had a Magnaflow on it but I had it removed as it was just a restriction.

I probably could have tucked it a little more, but with the hedders on already a lot of my tucking area was lost. My options were drill and bung the hedders for pre-o2 or try and basically sleeve the collector and drill/bung that then fit the cat's at about a 45* angle downward because regardless the crossmember/tranny pan is in the way and in all honesty the only really good tuck job I thought about was wrapping the hell out of the the pipe and running it above the crossmember on drive side.

I had a hole in my muffler so I had them chop it and the resonator off and put a magnaflow on. It sounds WAY cooler than a soccer mom Disco. Im not gonna lie, between the tires and the exhaust it is a little loud on the interstate, but thats the price you gotta pay to sound cool.
