Going to look at a 95 RRC today, any last minute advice?

Where is it?

Ive seen decent ones go for 5-6K, with no/minimal rust in Texas recently.

Talk to Matt at Overland Engineering about them.

You love them or hate them, no inbetween.
Don't expect a full servicehistory at this age so eyes and ears open when going for a spin.
If the EAS is ok and not to much rot go for it.
An engineswap is 2 days work
ZF autobox is bullitproof
BW transfercase can be noisy...
It's the last model that can be repaired with a hammer and pliers but the price must be right.
Tony.

PULL THE CARPETS AND LOOK FOR ANY RUST. Even if its from california and looks 100% great from the outside. Trust me on this one. The sound deadening can wreak havoc with the floors and rockers from the INSIDE.

Otherwise 2-4k depending just how nice.

Is it the white one from California on Craigslist?

How does the sound deading get wet? Is it from wet carpets due to wet shoes? Or is it from leaking something else??

From my experience, the water got in through the vent in the hood cowl and made its way through the dry rotted seals in the upper firewall. There's all sorts of holes in the firewall that could let water in. The sound deadening then held the water, and the rust ate 6" diameter holes in both footwells.

If the RRC's are like disco's, once the a/c drain holes mud plugs get plugged they drain into the floor pans. Sometimes you see the water, some times you dont.

Usually it soaks under the hard rubber top portion of the mat and into the open cell foam below where it sits and sits, and sits...

Ive drained a lot of water out of mine before i got rid of the a/c drain mud plugs.

All of the above. And more. There are a lot of holes where it can come in and has no way to get out. The harder rubber top layer keeps any water that get under from evaporating out. It's a terrible design but not uncommon with many many modern cars. Very effective sound deadening so they use it.

mine came in from the rotted mud guard mounts. no telling how many years the sound deadening material was soaked like it was. odd things is it never soaked through to the carpet nor did it smell...or maybe its because mine always smells like fuel. pull both front carpets. I learned the hard way. sometimes I hate my 95-but mostly I love it. and for the little maintenance that I do on it...its been the best Rover I've ever owned. every malfunction or mechanical problem has been relatively easy to find and fix and are all for the most part well documented. and yes, hammer and pliers will help to fix this truck. :) GL

Thx folks for the info.. I forgot how bad it can get and don't need the rust worms to start. And Switzerland is a far cry away from dry S. Cal. where my Rangie started.
