I'm tired of my LR... I never thought I would say it but.... I am...

I purchased my 99 Disco One about 3 years ago, with 45k on the clock. At 75k....you guessed it, the headgaskets went...

I spent 3500 for a new engine (well it had 3000 miles on it) and had Rover drop it in... (I didnt have the space to work on it--apartment complex living at its greatest.)

It has since been a fairly reliable truck. The power steering is starting to let go but its not a big deal--wont take much to get fixed.

The issue is---Every since I purchased the truck and the head gasket went I have always had a sinking feeling that everytime I drove it something was bound to happen. It's mechanical, and I know its eventually going to break, but it's just not "fun" to try to do even moderate wheeling with anymore. I just get so worried about breaking things and then having to shell out big $$ just because a part says "Land Rover". Not to mention having to wait to get the part because none of the local part houses stocks it.

I know.. If I want to play I should shut up and pay....
I do feel like a little girl whining about all this, I really do love my rover, but its just not feasable to use it for what I want to on a junior enlisted budget.

I own the Rover outright and when I returned from my deployment late last month I gave the Rover to my Father. He didnt have a vehicle and lives in Utah. At 77 he really needed a AWD vehicle to be able to buy groceries and get to a hospital if he needs, I didnt want him driving a car in the snow.

Now the part that everyone is going to hate me for:

I went out and purchased a new 2008 Jeep Wrangler X.

I really needed the lifetime warrenty(peace of mind), and it gets good gas mileage.

Parts are easy to find and pretty cheap for it(if for some reason the part wasnt covered under warrenty-like the clutch)

I actually pay less for full coverage insurance with a 250 deductable than I did for my rover with a 1000 deductable.

I have driven for 1200 miles total now, the best MPG: 23, the worst: 18.....

It's a 6 speed....

Ill be here to give advice in the tech section from what I've learned with rover ownership over the last 3 years. and Ill still be bs-ing with you on the general chat, but I just wont visit as much.

Good luck.

Based on age, I'd rather be the one stuck on the side of the road with a vehicle failure than my parents or grandparents!

I like the Jeep 4drs, but I know a few people who bought them new and have had all kinds of problems. It can happen to anything no matter the age or marque.

I'm more a "devil you know..." kind-of girl I guess.

Yeah, I agree with the breaking down thing.

Im in a better position than him to get it fixed if it does---he only drives maybe 10-15 miles a week though.. so the high gas prices really dont affect him, nor would the possibility of breaking down. If I could have given him something else I would have, but it was either that or my motorcycle---yeah that wouldnt happen!

I like the TJ unlimiteds with their longer wheelbase, but in my opinion the JK 4doors are a little much--- I went with a two door, softop. (have no place to store the hard top when its off, and here in AZ that would be every day!)

I have heard of people having issues with them as well, but most have been covered under warrenty. If I had bought a used one that would kinda figure into things(no lifetime warrenty with a secondhand jeep or an 07) but its there for piece of mind.

Now I just need some 33's and Ill call it good. Not having to lift it to get the 33's is a plus as well.

Not surprised. We've been saying this for years. How many times has a discussion centered around "Where the hell is LR going?"

Just think of all the money you saved and what that can be spent on!

Yeah,

236 for a front locker, only need a 2.5 BB to put 37's. If I wanted to get a decent lift I would only really have to pay about $750.

Every vehicle is the same---more money better parts...

Some vehicles just take less $$ than others.

I just had to weigh age/reliability as a dd versus getting something new and relatively risk free.

Using it as a daily driver AND wheeling was starting to go nowhere fast in my $$ calculations.

At least until Chrysler goes bankrupt anyway...

At some point Cyberus is going to realize they can't keep up with that warranty, and will stop it.

Very true..

Hopefully it will be a bit down the road, but who knows?!

Who is the Steve Young of the Jeep world?
There are many Steve Youngs in the jeep world. At the very least, as many as there have been Jeep model lines.

I was going to sell my DI and buy a new Jeep Unlimited Rubicon. With the "friends & family" discount, it wasn't too bad of a price. Then I realized that a Jeep is still not as much fun as my DI. In the end, I kept the DI and bought a gently used DII (with fresh head and valve cover gaskets:))

Oh yeah...since then, there are 4 new Unlimiteds in our employee lot. And still only 1 Disco :D

In my 2002 TJ I had to put a 2.25" spacer lift on to fit 32s.. possibly could have done 33s...

As I've said before though, every time I drove the jeep I just felt so ordinary, even though there werent many (lightly) modded Jeeps around, so I did still stick out... I bought a D90 and sold the TJ and haven't looked back (ok, the only thing I do miss is running w/o the doors and the d90 isnt as friendly with that)...

spend thousands to save hundreds. classic example of how gas prices are changing people views on what they do and own.

I realize there was more to this decision, but you know part of the decision was gas mileage/gas price...

It's my Rover or my mountain bike. So far, the rover is winning because I have cash to put in the tank....and riding 30 miles round trip to work on a bicycle is suicide for me :)

Yes you're right. There was a lot more to it than gas mileage. If I just wanted a vehicle with better gas mileage I would have just given up going off road totally and stuck with my motorcycle for a DD. Ive lived with a motorcycle as my only souce of transo before.

Guess it just boils down to me feeling that dad needs a vehicle and I also wanted something newer than a 99 for a change.

--looking at a set of KM2's... anybody have any expirience with these tires?
