So where did you find an SWR meter??? I found one at radio shack but it didn't do shit. I'm afraid to use mine due to hearing you can fry it. I have mine setup just like yours...

One of the main reasons I choose this unit (other than they only had two models left) was that this radio comes with the SWR meter built in

I have one as well as two of my friends. We can be less than 1/10th of a mile apart on the highway and not be able to talk to each other. I've read mixed reviews about this model. I wouldn't buy it again; nor, would my two friends.

most of us around here use them up to 5 around town and close to 20 miles on the beach. yours must not be set up correctly. was it tuned and does it have a good ground plane?

Yes, it was tuned. No, it has a poor (or no) ground plane. I have a 3' Firestik mounted on an ARB bumper. It is strange. I can talk to others, my friend can talk to others; but, we cannot talk between ourselves. I will get a better antenna and mount it on the roof; but, it will be connected to a better CB, too. I want one with a built in SWR meter. I wonder if the patch cable skews the reading of the external SWR meter I have. Does ground plane effect reception? The weather band reception is pathetic.

ground plane is dependent on mounting location and antenna not the cb.

Does a bad ground plane effect the quality of reception or just the quality of transmission?

All the electronics are in the handset of the 75WXST. I just can't believe that the same quality radio can be fit in the handset as in one of those big chrome radios that the truckers use. I'll replace my antenna and locate it on the roof; but, the CB is going to get replaced, too.

Not true. I have the exact same radio in my Defender and it works great. Ask sean, when I was back in San Antonio, we could talk from over 2 miles away and that's in the city.

I'm leaning towards a Galaxy DX979 for my next CB. I'll change the antenna first and see if the Cobra works better.

a few things to check.
ohm out the cable make sure you don't have a short or bad ground.
i asume you used a 16 foot cb cable (cable length does matter)
make sure there are no loops in it (they create a coil that produces a magnetic field and resists changes in current)
it helps if the sides of the antenna don't have metal close to them. (but will still work aka.. rear bumper mount.)
antennas have a min. sqare footage of metal that must be under/around the base for them to work to full potential, they work best on the roof or with a groundless plane design.
the 75 is a bare bones radio it doesn't have the reverb or echo controls (which are a joke) or a built in swr meter, but they do work just as well as most cb's.

i am still curios about the birds i havn't heard the results of the tests.
and yes the river walk sucks, it's a giant tourist trap.

I decided to revise my post because of my excessive use of monosyllabic words. Thanks for not quoting it.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to San Antonio. I really like Austin and would consider living there.

Today I was not impressed with my CB, even though I tunned the antenna to close to 1.2:1 the range was not even a mile, maybe is what you said about the min SqFt required, quality was not bad but it was not good either

Edit. I missed Mike and John
