After a year and 6x in the shop with the warranty ticking down to less than 1K I got rid of the LR3 and purchased an 04 RR.

Should have done it in the first place.

I shed a tear when the first oil drip fell on the ground... I am back on the rave CD looking for possible suspects.

I am a sucker for punishment, but at least I feel that I can work on this truck.

Reason I'm asking is in the next few years, I plan on purchasing one. Explain your repairs? Was it major or just minor nacks such as electrical gizmos?

We bought our 05 LR3 in November 2008 with ~55k miles. It now has 80K miles. We havent had any trouble with it. Just a front windscreen leak and a broken fog light (from a rock). I am very happy with the LR3 reliability vs my previous 96 D1, 00 and 02 DIIs, 97 RR and 91 RR (currently trouble free w/78k miles)!!!

the leak is most likely your cam covers and also check your oil seperator hoses and repl them as well......allow a good chunk of time to remove clean and reinstall too!

The 04 RR is all BMW and I have found it fairly easy to cross reference parts to their BMW counterparts. The M62 engine is the same as in the 04 X-5 4.4L and I can get engine parts from the local napa.

05 LR3 Land Rover Certified

1. bought from dealer and within a week had priming oil lifter issue. Not covered under warranty, but dealer took care of it. It still does not sound right.

2. Intermittent starting problem that took 4 trips to dealer to find a faulty ground strip. total cost $400 after 4 deductables.

3. Broken hose for vaccum on fuel tank broke vac pump (not under warranty) $500 (the straw)

4. Broken sunroof regulator. Warranty $100

5. Unresolved squeaking of dash and interior finish problems that are stressful.

6. Broken parts inside unresolved.

7. all within 1 year and the $600 worth of regular maintenance

Verdict: wife said "if you are going to have a car in the shop that much, it better be something you want to spend the money on, not a car that you settled for because it was a good buy."

I think the LR3 was fantastic, I had a bunch of little things that kept creeping up and I did not love that truck.

The BMW RR is what I wanted. I can work on it much easier than the Jag engine. The earlier drip was hopeful. That was water (not coolant). Has not done any marking since.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire is right, Rob, but I am willing to get burned on this one. I almost lost my faith with the LR3. I love the finish and drivability of the RR. It does not compare. I can at least service this at my favorite independent and source cheaper parts than the LR3. I am content with the probability that it will give me problems, but the LR3 was always a stressor with the wife: "that thing is in the shop again?" That never happened with the D2 even though I was always working on it. How many people can say their wife supports a switch from a LR3 to a RR?

Tire options suck for the 19" rims, but I will work on getting some BFGs on the white beast soon enough.

Wow I'm feeling an urge to go hug mine and knock on wood. I still have lots of warranty and a couple dealer trips a year have taken care of most things, but for some reason I'm kind of turned on by LR3 mechanics. Call me crazy

Never settle for anything, I hope your RR brings you lots of love.

My wife married her Land Rover mechanic! FYI, that would be me, and of all of the Rovers I've owned, the LR3 is the only one she likes to drive.
But, she was driving a RHD 110 diesel around Moshi yesterday and mentioned she liked the way they look in white...
There's hope for her yet!

Nice. LR3's are pretty nice but the RR is in a league of its own. I'd feel safer with the BMW over the Jaguar. 04 I believe was at the end that whole front differential issue. If you waited till 05 though you could have had the fancy off road information display.

White is a great color for the RR too. Good luck with it.

Loving life! The sound of the RR engine and the throttle response is really sporty and the finish inside is so much nicer than either the D2 or the LR3.

I am grinning from ear to ear.
