We docked in the caymans for a day on a cruise. My father and I rented jet skis for $65/hr each. Best money spent on that cruise. Beautiful water to ski on, and fun to go around the ships.

I have been there three times. Twice on a cruise, once for 10 days. Also even looked at going to school down there.

If you are a diver go dive The Wall, insane to see a 20,000+ vertical cliff under water. Dive with the stingrays, its been a while, but I think they still let you dive with them, its a shallow dive, but its wayyy better than snorkeling with them. Also if you are able to then dive the harbor wreck. Most people don't get a chance to dive this since cruise boats are stacked in there most of the year.

Go get some turtle soup, I forget, but there is a place right downtown that serves the best, just ask around.

Go to The Wharf (IIRC) and eat dinner and feed the tarpon.

I think we ate at sunset grill (sunset house?), had a good band, one of the few restaurants right on the beach from what I remember.

Also, there is a place on the other side of the island, none of us could remember the name of it, but it was a decent drive from 7 mile beach, it might have been calypso grill. It was good.

Other than that, just sit back and enjoy an ice cold carib. This isn't a spring break type place, its a relaxing vacation, focused around the water. A lot of great diving.

IF you're not a certified diver and you have time to get it done before your trip I highly recommend it.

Get you a bottle of big black dick. I brought some back, its funny sitting on the shelf, also got a tank...instant beach classic.

Stay away from 7 mile beach and Georgetown, it's become as bad as Nassau over the last decade. We usually stay along the north side or down in Bodden Town where it's far quieter and less overrun with tourists. Happy to reccomend places to stay, we usually rent a house instead of a hotel though, with the kids having your own kitchen is really helpful. If you go this route I can tell you where to get your groceries and booze on the way out of town.

I really enjoy diving the east end, usually with Ocean Frontiers who is absolutely the most buttoned up dive operation I've used. Make sure to hit Rum Point and take a cat or glass bottom boat out to stingray city. Dive the wall as mentioned above, and definatly hit the east end. Turtle Farm is fun, the car museum is worth a stop. Pedro's castle is fine. There's some great authentic food on the north side and east end that isn't to be missed (as opposed to another shitty Dicks last resort on 7MB).

Feel free to ping me for any details, I got in something like 22 hours of bottom time off of Grand Cayman in the last 18 months, we've been a lot.

Thanks for all the great advice. We are in a townhouse on the very north tip of 7mb on north church st. There is a market right there from what I saw on google. The beach is rocky where we are but I heard a 5 minute walk puts u on sandy north end of 7mb. I have an option to rent a car for $400 or pay $400 toward the house rental. Does it make sense to rent a car? Any good restaurant Reccomendations on the north west corner of the island?

I think that's where the little Fosters (grocery store) is sort of across from the Subway. It's nicer up there as the hotels haven't pushed in too much. Fosters will have what you need, but they don't sell booze, you'll need a beer and wine shop for that. I'm sure there's something up that way, but if not there are plenty of places along 7mb and towards the airport.

I'd rent the car. there's some great stuff to explore and, while you can walk to other beaches from where you are, it can be a longer hike, especially with groceries (or beer).

Since you're staying up that way, make sure to check out cemetary beach. the access point is on the north end of the cemetary that's on the west side of the road 3/4 of the way up 7mb. park in front of the cemetary and walk up the access path -- it's picture postcard beautiful. Also up that way is the previously mentioned car museum and Hell (which is more tourist hell, but worth stopping at). Turtle farm is there as well. With the car you can get out to restaurants Much easier bus service is intermittant, taxis are sparce and pricey), along with groceries and the rest of the island. A fun day is driivng around the island to rum point -- leaving in the morning, getting there for lunch, some painkillers, some snorkeling, and then back in the afternoon.

You should be able to get any number of snorkeling trips out to stingray city or over to rum point from the the marina (half way down 7mb). Red Sail Sports is a big (carribean-wide) activities company that could be a good starting point for water-based activities for you: http://www.redsailcayman.com/en/index.html. There are also innumerable independent people that will take you for a sail/snorkel/dive/whatever.

As for restuarants up that way, I can't really help. There's not a lot up there as it's mostly residential. Further down 7mb are all the chain places (to be avoided if you ask me) and some standalone's that are apparently hit or miss. The restuarants along 7mb and in georgetown are quite expensive, though some are purported to be good. If you do make it to the other side of the island, I"m a big fan of 'Over the Edge" which is run by a surly french lady but has hyper-fresh fish that's prepared wonderfully.

Haven't been in quite awhile, but I'd skip the car. Cabs were pretty cheap, and the bus system is hysterical. Just random mini vans with no discernable schedule. Super cheap. The turtle farm is a decent 2 hours. Of course the diving. Red meat can be short sometimes. Do not miss out on Conch chowder, critters, or anything Conch. Second the Big black Dick. Grab a couple of bottles as those who have never seen it will try and drink you right out of the stuff.
