VW's doing it in their 4 cyl engines now. I would think that a simple re-program of the ECU could reap a load of fuel savings there.

Not without the DMC flux capacitor conversion. The paradox is that you have to be traveling at 88mph for it to work, but you need all 8 cylinders operating to achieve that speed. Plus a long, straight downhill and a tailwind.
