Get out more to your local chain restaurant? LOL. Ruth's Chris is mediocre.

LOL, whatever you say. Like any steak restaurant there is always a better one in another city. Saying RC is mediocre is silly. Go visit the original in NOLA and you'll sing a different tune. That said, the best steak IS the streak you make at home. We can all agree on that.

Bonefish blows the doors off of that place for quite a bit less money. If you don't feel like cooking, it's hard to beat.

Surprised the hell out of me the first time I went.

Cheers,

Kennith

It's funny you say this. I've had at least 3 people tell me the same. Never been. Thing is, I think Bonefish and Outback are all the same. This fact alone has kept me away.

Fuck, dude. Bonefish and Outback are night and day.

I hate Outback. They're owned by the same company, but that's where the similarity ends. Even the cuts of meat at Bonefish are impressive. I've eaten at some very fine restaurants in my time, and this place is just as good (if not better) than most of them.

For the most part, if you want a better steak, you've got to make it yourself.

I mean, if you want to walk out a restaurant $150-$250 lighter you might be okay, but that's an entirely different experience. That doesn't count.

Cheers,

Kennith

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on this. I'm from NOLA and Ruth Chris's is not the fucking place to go have a steak there, it's mediocre crap.

Is this a joke? That place was awful when I went there (which I'm embarrassed to even say that I've been). The only thing that is good about chain restaurants is that they are consistent.

I can't believe DWeb has come to the point that we are discussing chain restaurants. What's next, styrofoam coolers?!?

Fuck that. Half you people probably eat fast food fairly often and have a cabinet stocked with cans. There's nothing wrong with stopping by a chain restaurant to grab something to eat when you don't feel like cooking.

Your Bonefish must suck, the ones I've been to are abnormally great, or you got it into your head that it wasn't going to be good before you ever went through the door.

God damn. I've been to top-tier establishments all over the world, some of which won't let you out the door for less than $500, as well as eaten plenty of food in places most travelers would never come anywhere near. My favorite place to eat is Boston fucking Market.

Nothing wrong with that. At least I didn't have to cook it.

We've got some pretty good local steakhouses here, but like many local-type establishments, most are only referred to as good because people refer to them as good. It's just an infinite loop that doesn't go away.

Even the places that have become much worse over the years are still considered great; and people who drive through love to brag about the obscure place they've had a great steak the same way they're always "discovering" crap bands.

It must be good, because it's some place nobody has heard about...

Chain restaurants serve food. Food is required for survival. If you want to see how good it is, just tell them to leave the sauces and extra seasonings on the side.

I just had a can of Chef Boyardee Mini Shells and Meatballs, and dipped a grilled cheese in it several times; washing it down with Mountain Dew. I'm no longer hungry, and I enjoyed it.

Cheers,

Kennith

What exactly are you calling BS on here? My point was The RC in NOLA was one of the best out of the lot, at least from my experience. If clients didn't take me there I would have been elsewhere I assure you. If I'm there for fun times I mosey on over to Mother's for a Shrimp Po-boy, then off to Harrah's for some roulette and Black Jack. Weak, I know. Wouldn't catch me dead on Bourbon Street though.

I'm getting a kick out of everyone calling RC steaks 'mediocre'. I'm not a fanboy by any means but mediocre steaks they are not. But then again, I always get the Filet. Never even tried another cut there. This in itself could skew my opinion.

I travel for a living, so I get this. No other option. I have a long term friend in the restaurant management business. He says if you can see the kitchen from the dining area (wide open like Harper's here in NC) you're good to go, otherwise, leave. Interestingly enough RC does not abide by this rule sometimes.

In that case I can see the appeal of a chain restaurant. You will get exactly what you are expecting. That being said, you are probably missing out on some awesome food. I think every town, no matter how small or how big, has at least one great restaurant.

I really try to do this. Hampton Inns will often have a list of local establishments and watering holes at their front desk I live by. I was just in Florence, AL and did just that.

I really dislike chain restaurants. It's not the food as much as the sense of adventure that's lost at chain restaurants. I was in sales from 1991 to 2005 in the Midwest and traveled to IN, MI, OH, WI, IA, and MN. I ate some terrible food along the way while trying new places, but also found some gems: Korean food in Oshkosh, WI, fish fry in nowhere, IN, Chinese in Grand Rapids, MI, & all kinds of weird kick ass food in WI.

I understand the appeal of chain restaurants; you're guaranteed to get a meal that is adequate, sort of. I want life to be interesting even if that includes running the risk of eating some crappy food. As to the people who claim that Ruth's Chris sucks: they don't. It's adequate. It serves its purpose. On the other hand, it doesn't shine. You can go to Cancun and eat a steak at Ruth's Chris and get a decent steak. For the life of me, I can't understand why people go on vacation somewhere and eat the same fucking food that they have at home. I'd rather walk around and find a place that seems to have people who look like they live there and see what happens. The best meals of my life were at places that were clearly one off restaurants where you could tell that the people who were cooking had passion, not following some corporate process.

Totally agree. I can't think of a single chain that I would choose over an equivalent local option. You guys need to get out more.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think Ruth's Chris sucks, its just mediocre. I had lobster mac and cheese there that was way better than any steak I've had there.

Of all the delicious places to get a fantastic steak in New Orleans, RC is not it, not by a long shot. I will say I misread and thought you were touting RC Nola as a great steak place. It might be the best one out of it's chain, but certainly not where you get a good steak in NOLA.

No one local is usually caught dead on Bourbon St.. The only exception for me is when a local - Kermit- is playing his trumpet at one of the dive places.

I bet, would like to know your selection for an off the path local establishment for good NO food.

Notice you didn't have much to say about Mother's. One of the gals behind the counter got on me for wearing my Carolina Panthers pullover about a year ago. We razz each other every time I go now.

I ate at a Bonefish in Orlando once. Outfuckingstanding! Never had a "great" meal at one since.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or karma finally paid off here and we got a good one. I've been a number of times. Next time I go, I'll snap a couple of pictures. Not feeling too good tonight, though, so it might be next week sometime.

We've got some pretty crappy places to eat unless you're into NC Barbecue; and even then you're pretty much down to one of two places now.

Cheers,

Kennith
