This afternoon, one of my gifts I had to buy was an instructional guitar book for my 9 year old. My sis in law bought him a guitar last year and he wants to learn to play. I'm such a horrible teacher as I mostly play by ear, so I thought it would be good to get him a book with a lesson plan that he and I can go through together. Anyway, I went to this really large guitar/music store in Albany. I was amazed at the prices of some of the "vintage" guitars. As a wedding gift my wife bought me (i bought me) a 12 string Rickenbacker. I think at the time it was $800. At the guitar shop today, that same guitar was going for $2000-3000 and was worth more than the new ones! wow! Mine is virtually untouched. Another thing that blew me away was the "vintage" amplifiers. They had a room with old amps. They had a '65 Fender single speaker reverb amp for $2000! I have one that I bought when I was a teenager. It's also a early 60's blackface Fender Twin Reverb amp. I bought it back in the 80's for $150! lol! I was telling the guitar shop guys about it and they were going nuts. I need to get it fixed I suppose! lol! Does anyone know of a site where I can get info on old Fender amps?

I was also suprised to see that most of the Fender Guitars were either made overseas or in Mexico. I got mine in '82. It was my first electric. It's pretty bashed up, and as a kid I constantly fiddled with adding pick ups and a Kahler whammy. Too bad I didn't leave it stock.

That twin reverb is also a great amp to play the harp thru. Nothing like the warm sound from the old tube amps.

My all time favorite or let me clarify, the best guitar player I have ever seen play live was Stevie Ray Vaughan. I have seen some great guitar players in my life but none yet that can top Stevie. God rest his soul. I'll never forget the day I heard about his death. I was over in Saudi during Desert Shield. That day just plain sucked!

Cheers,

Mike

Yep! He was amazing. I never got to see him either. I had just starting working for CBS Records and was the mail room guy the day he died. I remember many of the Epic staffers were visibly shaken and left work early.

If you get a chance check out the "Live At Montreux" DVD. The first 1/2 shows in in 1982 when he first started and was a nervous kid, the second 1/2 shows him in '85 a confident veteran and in full glory.

If you have old stuff hang on to it. I have been through more vintage guitars and amps than I care to admit...and the ones i end up selling i always regret. I was recently in a guitar shop in NY that had an old marshall bass amp that i had bought probably 10 years ago. I told the guy my story of how I got it...and he told me of how much they plan on getting for it $$$$$. That amp had been across the country many times and was purchased by me in a pawn shop in GA....these things have some great history..so hang on to it if you can.

My dad had many early 50's through late 60's guitars (LP's, strats, Gretch's,etc) that he had to sell when I was born. He said we couldn't eat them, so it was the guitars or me... :) Now many of those are worth $200k+ EACH.

I'm friends with a vintage guitar dealer/broker, and if any of you guys are serious collectors, I can put you in touch with him.

If you want a good cheap amp suitable for a youngun to fool around with try out a Danelectro Dirty 30 or a Nifty 50. You can play around with these things and get some pretty funky sounding stuff outta them. I love mine!

Guitar baby! Got a crappy Ovation Trekker which is about 3/4 size but looks full size on me. I hate the damn thing, those oval backs are a bitch and my boobs get in the way and slide the guitar down my leg while I'm playing. I'm gonna eventually sell it and buy a decent Taylor that I've had my eye on for a while. Danelectro amps are like having every pedal you could possibly imagine hooked up...just a slight turn of the knob one way or the other and you would swear you are playing a totally different guitar.

Jen,

Which Taylor are you looking at? I have been going back to the music store and playing a Limited Taylor made of Koa. That thing is sweet esp finger picking. I've always had Martins and one baby taylor but I'm leaning more and more toward a Taylor Dreadknot. Another sweet one is a Collings. If I had the money to spare I'd own a Collings D2H.

Cheers,

Mike
