Halogen reverse bulbs

I would be concerned that they may overload the circuit or even be so hot as to melt the plastic parts of the lamp housing or socket.

I've used halogen bulbs, but yes, they will melt lenses, depending on how close they are. No issues in my MoD lights with glass lenses of course. I tried one in my 95 D1 rear bumper marker light. Didn't have any issues with overloaded circuit but it did melt the lens.
I have one in my rear indicator light specifically to add additional load. Since getting rear ended and having the bumper light melt from the crunched exhaust, I was getting a fast blink on the left side. The halogen bulb is a temporary fix. Since it's intermittent I'm not concerned about a melted lens.

Intuition should tell you that replacing a low wattage bulb with a 50 watt bulb will cause bad shit to happen.
I drive a Land Rover.... intuition is not one of my strengths ;) In all seriousness I have a damaged tail light assembly to test a bulb on. I figured if heat was an issue I would try to vent the back side of the housing. I'd really like to get better night time reverse visibility.

If heat is an issue what about a LED with a resistor. I wonder if it would give you the light output without the heat???

That looks super good. Is there a write-up anywhere?

Is that light on your truck?

Yes it is, its double side taped on. The wires are ran through the weather stripping I used a relay that gets its power from the 12v socket in the back. I also have a toggle switch so I can run them as a work light. They are my only reverse lights, as I have no lights in my bumper and a blinker where my reverse light should be.
