hard to start

I've got a 95 disco with 127k on it. Its become VERY hard to start. Engine cranks fine, new plugs, rotor, cap, etc. I have to out my foot to the floor while cranking. It smells like fuel under the hood but I can't find anything obvious.
One thing I have noticed is the fuel pump doesn't whine any more when you first turn the key. It has also become very loud.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Sounds like to me its the Fuel Pump..Crank away and it does not start? Crank..Crank ..Crank right? I smelled gas too from the engine. I believe your flooding it. Could be wrong. I also sorta of destroyed my shrader valve too while trying to test the pressure at the rails. oopss. It is fixed now. I would check the fuel pump like Joey said. Melissa 1998 D1 My pump went out 78K miles.

If the pump is fine, I would suggest leaking injector or injectors. Your cylinders are being flooded.

New develpments

Since yesterday the check engine light has come on. Took a look at the readout. It sez 44 which means left lambda sensor quit. I assume the "lambda" is the o2 sensor. So the question
is will this keep the car from stating?

If the O2 (Lamba) sensor is going bad or has gone bad, that should not stop the vehicle from starting.

It will cause poor fuel economy and may cause rough running though.

Well.. I'd say - dude, replace your ignition wires. And set gap on plugs properly, and not at this weird 0.30-32 as they selling them.

O2 sensor may fail as result of flooding, which is in turn is sign of fuel not being burned..

But then i am playiing too much with ignition, i guess...
