Having trouble getting gas tank to fill....

Sounds odd, but I have been having an issue recently (and done it at several different gas stations, and pump types)... But, most of the time (not all the time), I can't get more than 1/2 a tank in at the pump.

It keep clicking "off", even if I try to fill it slowly.

It's almost as if some vent for the gas tank isn't allowing it to fill quickly and it's building up pressure in the gas tank flow pipe, hence causing the pump to think the tank is fill and clicking off.

This weekend I had it overflow out of the gas cap area and all over the side of the car. I questioned whether it was full, but the low fuel light was on when I pulled in, and I only put about $25 worth in. So, I know the tank wasn't full.

Cleaned off the side with the squeegie thing and drove off with less than 1/2 a tank. I was starting to think that my tank actually was full and the gauge was reading wrong, but when it got low again, I was able to put a full tank in. I tried the medium grade of gas this time and I got a full tank today (that cost me $93 for 22 gallons, btw!).

Ouch!

So, what's going on with my rig?? This is a recent phenomenon. Say last few weeks.

Is there a vent somewhere that could be blocked up? I heard someone else tell me that if there's too much sulfur in the gas or something, it can play tricks with the pump??? I dunno. Thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone else knew.

I'm stumped! :banghead:

mine does the same thing. i cant get let it get too low on a warm day then fill it . it wont have it.

if its really low i must go in the morning when its cool.

its the breather vent thats plugged. I tried to clean mine out but it seems totally plugged. Next im going to try to floss it our with a heavy wire, if that doesnt work im replacing the filler neck.

I had this happen a couple of times. It is the most irritating thing. I found that for some reason at some stations if it does it and I pull the pump out just a little bit from where it was fully seated in the filler and leave it on the low setting it has no issue.

If you watch it when it's doing the stop filling up thing, you can see the gas come up into the filler part like it's about to overflow and as it cuts off it just drains back down really fast. It's stupid but as irritating as it is when it happens it doesn't happen often enough for me to really do anything about it b/c I've always been able to get it to fill up eventually.

I initially had this problem with a 2003 D2, but a service bulletin or similar directive instructed the dealer to replace a component on the filler hose or something and that corrected the problem. Until fixed, the only work-around was to very----slowly---- pump fuel into the tank to get it full. Ray

There is a bulletin on this on 2003's... my 03 displayed these exact symptoms about a year and a half ago.

Dealer fixed (breather hose fix / something attached to filler neck).... which didn't help and then they ended up replacing the entire filler neck. It was taking me 30-40 minutes to fill my tank.

it is the purge valve solenoid, not allowing the purge valve to vent into the engine evap system, it is located on the rear most part of the drivers side of the engine sanwiched between the valve cover and the firewall.
if your vehicle is under 80,000 miles it may be covered under federal emissions warranty and get it repaired free at the dealership.

Not that's it's a good idea to ignore the real problem, but for whatever reason, if I put the hose in and then turn it clockwise about 45 degrees, it will fill fine... The temperature doesn't seem to matter if I do this and have done it for over a year with no problem. I have no idea why it works.

I wish I could help, but I don't have this problem, knock on wood. I couldn't imagine standing outside in the Freezing cold for 30 to 40 minutes trying to fill the prick up.

I have heard from some others that the problem is the filler neck hose somehow gets pinched or vaccum pressure collapses the hose.
