Some things I will do Genuine; somethings I wont.
Plug wires=10 minute job= cheap wires
Head gaskets=pita/all day=Genuine

.

I totally agree. I'm not saying Genuine parts are better, I'm just saying that is probably the reason for the higher price. I also know that Sarek uses Genuine parts unless the customer specifically wants aftermarket.

I don't know what all this head gaskets leaking 100% of the time is all about..... I've owned 7 LR's and only this recently bought 98 D1 I have needs gaskets. All the other LR's I put plenty of miles on and never had head gasket issues....

The 1k to 1.6k 4.6L was out of a RR with only 60K And it would have saved me time vs tearing my 4.0L down.

They all leak coolant eventually. The bosch motors usually start leaking before 60k miles and the GEMS and 14CUX make it to probably 90 or so before leaking much.

Seems like a pretty bold statement. Don't know about the GEMS, but my Wife's 99D2 on original head gaskets went 165k before we sold it, and I never added a drop of coolant inbetween 3k oil changes. Maybe a small top-off every 4-6 months, that's it.
My 99D2 has 135k on original head gaskets, and no coolant issues.

Well, Jimmy fixes Rovers for a living so he's basing that statement on experience.

FWIW, one of my 91 RR made it to 145k miles w/o head gaskets and my current driver 91 RR has 110k on original heads.

Not calling bs but are you sure? That is shocking.

I never had any head gaskets replaced on my previous 5 Rovers. Mileage ranged from 35K to 170K. I now have two 98 D1's and one has leaking head gaskets with 147K and the other has 119K and they're fine.

Think it depends a lot on climate, driving style, and how it's maintained.

I don't have all of the documentation on my 95, but I bought it from the original owner who always had it serviced at the dealer except for the last "tune up" before he put it up for sale that was done at an indy shop that specializes in LRs. AFAIK never had the HGs done, currently at 134k. Leaks coolant out of the temp sensor I put in on the intake manifold, no where else that I see. It does leak everything else though.

My 00DII had the HG's done under warranty at 38K. I'm doing HG's at this time at 193K. I only had slow / oil / coolant 'seep' at the front, outer corners of the heads, nothing 'blown' per se, but seemed to be getting progressively worse, more than I was comfortable with given my once/twice a year long distance expeditions.

Who ever the LR tech was at the time working at LR Northpoint, Alpharetta, Ga., did an excellent job. Black RTV in all the right places, the gaskets still looked good.

Although not the 200K plus service Ive always gotten from all my Fords, Ive been content with my 193K Ive gotten with my truck. I think there's some truth to the high mileage service some folks are getting from their motors.

Opted not to go with head gaskets. New engine. Expensive yes, but if its broke fix it.

If you are in Richmond, Va. I recommend Sarek Autowerks, Drew and John are outstanding.

Could you detail that a little more - "new engine" Remanufactured? Short block, long block with heads, top hat liners? What is "expensive" ?
