This is too ambiguous of a question for anyone to answer in a way that you will find helpful. It's like asking "what's the best plane?" Best engine for what? Best HP? Best torque? Best fuel economy? Best longevity? Best sound? Best for tuning? The more specific you can be the better information you'll receive. And keep in mind the inherent subjective nature of the question. Ask 10 different people and you might get 10 different answers.

The answer to your question is the one that is not overheated, uses quality gaskets and hardware, and is installed correctly.

And has a well-maintained cooling system: i.e. not a crappy old partially blocked radiator, tired water pump, questionable thermostat, and weak hoses.

It makes no difference if you replace the head gaskets without addressing the root causes of overheating. You'll be doing the job again.

...I didnt know if there was a defect in the d2 heads or block or is it a result of just dont give damn owners

Probably a bit of both.

It seems that the later blocks are more prone to fail; but that's just based on my addled recollections of what I've seen posted.

Does anyamlooking ow if any early d2s had the 4.0 and what Vin range if so . I am looking for a disco for my son he wants to start building it before he's old enough to even drive. I told him that's a pretty good idea because it will never stop (repairing building what ever you want to call it):banghead:

We were told "aluminum head", expect to replace the gasket at 100,000 miles or earlier. Just part of the package. We need to replace ours. Overall, we are not unhappy with maintenance costs versus other vehicles.

It's also old technology. Buick and Olds used this engine in the late 60's .
