I'm having excessive rattling coming from the driver's side heat shield on the Cat. Is it a big deal if I take it off or is it absolutely necessary? I don't have a welder handy to make a quick bead on the crack. thanks for any help

If this is the one that is under the floor of the rear seat, get a new one and reenforce it with some sheat metal or it will constantly break. If you do not have this and are in any kind of hat weather, you will stand the chance of burning the carpet in the rear seat area. At least that happened on my 95 D1.

ooooh....the cat shield. my bad...i cant read or think today! thought you were talking about the one between the manifold and starter. yes, get it fixed.
On my D2 the shield is located under the passenger seat (roughly). I tried some JB Weld but of course the stuff just melted right off from the heat
