Heated Windshield

I just picked up an '04 SE7 with the cold weather package and found out that it has had the windshield replaced with a non-heated one. Is it worth putting in a heated one? I might be able to get the dealer (non-Land Rover) to pony up for some or all of the $750 cost since that was a selling feature. Just wondering if it is worth the hassle.

In Ontario, like as in Canada, as in bloody cold in winter?

Yes, very worthwhile doing. It will be extremely useful during those arctic months.

I really like mine, even in "just" Ohio winters. When I had it recently replaced because of a crack, I put the heated back in though it would've cost the same either way due to insurance.

If he's in Southern Ontario it doesn't get nearly as cold there as it does in say "Michigan" (I lived in Toronto for 15 years....coldest it get's is about average -20 deg celsius or -4 deg farenheit in the winter)

It's a "nice to have item" but the cost to change it is pretty costly. But if you really want it..........go for it.

That's cold damn it!

I spent my week wrenching in 116F weather pulling a heated windshield out of a truck to put in mine. I *might* get to use it one day out of the year - on vacation.

That's not cold (at least for a Canuck). In Saskatchewan where I am now it get's to -45 deg C or -49 deg F and northern Canada can get colder.....then there's the windchill factor.....brrrr.....glad it's summer cus it goes the other extreme here and we get up to +45 deg C or 113 deg F.

If I were you I would definitely get the heated windshield. They are a damn sight more expensive than the non-heated ones, but you get lots of use out of it in an Ontario winter - I wouldn't do without it up here in Ottawa.

The insurance company were going to replace mine in my disco II with a non-heated variant but I pointed out the difference and they ponied up for the full amount, less deductible. Since you bought the car with the winter package I would say you have a pretty good case with the people you bought it from.

Check the laws in your state on windshield replacement as they do vary. Some states require insurance companies to cover the cost of a new windshield, others do not. The states that require insurance to pick up the tab usually are much more strict on replacement once a crack appears.

Out here in Idaho, the transportation department makes spending any extra coin on windshields a ridiculous endeavor. In winter, roads are treated with sand (always with a large side-order of small rocks) rather than salt. In summer, the same roads are re-paved using a process called "chip-sealing" whereby they coat the surface with a gratuitous layer of small rocks loosely applied over the existing asphalt. The rocks only adhere to the surface after traffic has driven them into the asphalt. If you can get through a single year without a crack on your windshield, you probably were driving a different vehicle.

Moral of the story: if you have to replace your windshield with any regularity and/or out of your pocket, save your $ and get the standard glass.

If you got it from a dealer and they advertised a heated windshield, or even just the cold weather package if a heated windshield is a standard part of that package, then the dealer should cover 100% of the cost of a heated winshield, IMO. Whether you can get them too, well, I guess it depends on their honesty and the truth in advertising laws where you live.
