Hella 4k's and The Ideal Wiring method

I'll ask about the ideal way of getting the wires to the roof later...

Right now I'm thinking of purchasing 2 Pencil Beams and 2 Cornering Beams, all for about $460 which includes 2 Hella Wiring Harnesses.

Now I've seen a couple of threads stating you can only use the factory switch for 55W lights, or you can use the Cruise Control button? 2004 DII. The blank lower left button holder has wires, but no button. What can I use this for?

Otherwise, do most of you guys hook up two wiring harnesses? I'm thinking one for the two Pencil Beams, and one for the two Cornering Lights? Do you also add the rear work light to the cornering lights harness, or do you hook that up in a different way?

Really excited to get this rack together! You guys have done it, show me how!

Thanks!

Do you use a factory switch or something else? Did you use the Hella Wiring Harnesses or are there cheaper alternatives?

Do you have a light in the rear? How's that hooked up?

Thanks!

I do have a light in the rear (Hella FF) and I use a simple on/off switch from Radio Shack. I ran some wires from the battery to the back because I also have a QuickAir II with an Air Tank and needed a thicker gauge wire than the stock wires.

Do a search on Hella wiring as this has been discussed many times. Install and wiring depends on how you want them configured.

Do you want the two different sets of rack lights to work on one switch or independently?

Do you want them to turn on with low-beams, high-beams, a combo, or at anytime?

Do you want to use factory binnacle switches or does this not matter?

Do you want the rear light to come on during back-up, manual toggle, via rear fog light wiring, or something else?

Also - do you currently have front factory fogs hooked up and working or not? Any other after-market lights hooked up? And I suppose you have the rear factory fogs there on the bumper.

I have stock lighting, which includes the front and rear fogs.

I'd like the corner lights to work with the blinkers, and the pencil lights to engage at 90 mph.

Actually, I think I'd like to either have two or three switches. I'd like to turn on all lights whenever I want, independant of the vehicle's lighting. Right now I'm thinking one switch for all front lights, and one for the rear. Can I do that with two Harnesses? And, can I do anything with the switch wires on the lower left switch that has a blank cover?

I am running 4 switches on 4 relays. Two cornering 4K's on the rack to one switch, two pencil beams on rack to one relay, two 900 IPF's to one relay and then a reverse/backup lamp on the rack to one other switch. I used the Hella Marine switches and surrounds that hold 2 switches and mounted them up where the sunroof controls are.

That looks pretty cool!

So do I NEED the Hella Harness, or are there cheaper ones that will work just as well? Also, can I use the Hella Harness with a different switch? I think so, but want to be certain before I order.

$448 - 2 Pencils, 2 Corners, 2 Harnesses
I'll get the rear light and harness locally...

LOL! Holy cow man! Does your Disco actually go 90!?!

On a more serious note, check your local laws, but in most states Hella 4000's are for off use only and can't be used legally on roads. Sure, sure, we all bend the rules, but becareful with their use or you may get ticketed. You definitely don't want the cornering lights to come on with blinkers as you could really blind other drivers which could be dangerous.

Right now I have have two Hella 4000 Driving lights set up on my brush bar. I have a extra fuse block set up near the battery well. THere is a perfect place for it there along with the relays you'll need. I would definitley recommend geting the Hella harness, it will make life much easier. I have an extra cruise control switch on my binical that I use to turn them on and off. I also have them wired so I can only turn them on with my high beams. Which is great if I see oncoming traffic. They are EXTREMELY bright and will really light up the road. Believe me you'll be impressed.

Now that I have a SD rack, I think I'm going to move them up there and put Hella Fogs on my brush bar. Another idea for switches is to get a D1 switch panel and put it in place of your ashtray.

Where did you get that switch pod? I love the look and think that it would be nice to have something similar... Are those white circles the indicators?

That's what I've done on my Discovery -

Personally, I prefer the 'factory' look.

God, it took me much longer than it should have to figure out why the hell your switches were where your clock belongs.
That's because it's a UK right-hand steer vehicle, for driving on the correct side of the road :p
