Take your time and do your research. I own a d 1 so am not super familiar with d2s. There is a lot of good info here and other places as well. Check the truck out thoroughly, yourself or have a mech do it. The first one I bought stranded me on the drive home in a snow strom in the middle of Wyoming. (the seller came and got me and refunded money)

look for brakes needing replaced. services up to date and make sure everything works. drive for about an hour before giving money. I hope it goes well I think you will enjoy it. look at some of the photos and threads. There are a lot of great looking d2s people on this site have built.

Cheers Andy

Thanks Andrew,
I am not really worried about the maint stuff so much. I have never owned a Rover and am not sure of what typically goes awry with them. For instance, you can bet the house on a 98 Jeep Grand the ****** will need to be rebuilt by 90,000, mine was at 65k :(

I know one of the mechanics that work at the above dealership, so as soon as I can I am going to ask him to check into it for me.

Thanks again.

Brian, I don't know what your intentions are. But I bought mine to make into an off -roader. I have had more fun building things for it and learing to drive off-road. My goal was to make a semi serious 4x4 for 10k or less including the price of the vehicle. Bought a d1 (95) for $5900. put a winch, winch bumper, sliders ome lift and shocks and arb locker in. And by the time I have the roof rack and front locker I will be at 10k. oh ya new brakes on the front and minor maint. I just know that this sites gave me good ideas on what to get what things to stay on top of.

This will be my daily driver as well as a wheeler, BUT, fact is I really don't make it out to wheel more than 4 times a year. For this reason I need it to be reliable more so than an off road monster.

I would take it to LR Main Line or LR West Chester or Wilmington and have it checked out before buying. Odds are you will have a list of about 2-4k in repairs.

Unless you are going to do all the work yourself or have a cheap rover mechanic (oxymoron) the ones that are out of waranty can be more money than they are worth in savings on them.

I know main line sold an 02 SD certified with 48k for 19k so 15k for a 1999 sounds not too good. That is a leather car but still.

that disco is loaded well beyond leather, the dealership hasnt listed much onthe website about it. I stopped after hours to check it out, it appears to be an SE7 with EVERYTHING. I was surprised to see radio controls for the "Jump seats". From the looks the only thing I will need to get are cupholders.

I am interested it knowing what actually breaks on these things. It will see a minimal of off-roading and when I do go its only to the C&D Canal for light trails.

Also, what is the life expectancy for these? I know next to nothing about Rovers!

It is a non-ACE truck from what I can see. So not everything :)

What breaks?

Valves stick, MAF, oil leaks, sunroof rails, SLS air springs, rocker noise, dropped liners, coolent leaks, head gaskets, etc etc search the archieves.

Odds are in needs brakes and rotors to really pass Pa State Inspection.

Just have it checked before buying. Or be prepared to do some work and spend some money.

DIIs are generally ok, but my experience from when I worked at Main Line is that the non-franchise trucks generally have a lot of issues.

LR is set up so that dealers buy about 1/3-1/2 of the trucks traded in so they take the nice ones, the ones with issues, prior accident damage etc go to auction and end up at the non-franchise lots. At least where I worked, the certified trucks were nice, had all the work done and were generally issue free. The ones that came in to service from JOe's auto lot or Philadelphia Nissen were crap. At least the other franchise lots (nissen, honda, mitsu) who sold the LR stood behind them and were pretty good about picking up the tab on repairs for their customers.

You can certainly find a nice one if you look at enough, ask if it was traded in on an acura or just an auction buy, why they wanted an acura (ie disco was too unreliable, expensive, facing major work etc.)

Now with that caveat, it looks nice and if it checks out I would go after it. Anything is better than a jeep!

WOW thats alot to go wrong!!! Sounds like a Jeep! hahaha

The vehicle was traded, I called Wilmington where its from and its up to date on all service and the brakes are newer and serviced for a recall in June. The truck is dent free and was really taken care of (Judging by the condition of the interior) No mud underneath(Ie. probably not wheeled). I am only concered at this point with buying a truck with that high of mileage. I have no concept of how long these things last. Can a warranty be had for that high of mileage?

Thanks for your response Ron

Cheers

How many miles?

LR has an extended warantee program but it changes since I was there so I don't know the details. you can get it to 100k.

Like I said my recommendation would be CPO with 100k warranty.

They generally last a good while it is just they get prohibitively expensive to maintain unless you DIY it.

BTW you can call my better half (Alyssa) at Main Line (or call wilmington) and she can help you with the warranty thing. I know you need to take it for an inspection at a dealer, but the warranty is really good. Most people it pays for itself several fold. The service history is a good sign, the truck may pan out after all.
